Bryce_Fishin24 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Just to curious because the closest outdoor sports store is BPS, and we all k ow how pricey they could be... Well I'm tired of wearing regular clothes when I go outdoors such as fishing especially in the winter, I want to start buying warm reliable outdoor weather ckothes... Thing is right now I have about a couple hundred to spend, I was thinking boots and a jacket first and foremost but could you guys let me know what you would recommend when you're outdoors in the harsh weather as it's always good to be prepared and what brands you recommend so that way I know I could possibly save money? Just start throwing things out there guysplease and thank you. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted December 17, 2015 Super User Posted December 17, 2015 Goodwill and Salvation Army. Not kidding. May have visit repeatedly to get size and material you want, but there are unbelievable deals to be had. I'm not suggesting you may not need to compromise on color or brand....and this may not be the best time of year to shop. But, most of my better cold and foul weather gear was bought second-hand. Cmiller Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I would definitely start with a jacket and boots. Columbia makes really nice jackets that have a nice zip out fleece liner. Quote
Bladesmith, Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 A few years ago I discovered snowmobile suits. They are warm, water resistant, and all the seams seal against wind. This is the most comfortable, and warmest clothing I have discovered for wintertime fishing (or any other outdoor activity). Together with a good pair of pack boots from Cabela's, I can stay warm in the nastiest weather. Gloves are optional as I cannot use them while fishing but I do keep them available for warming my hands when they get too cold. Quote
Bryce_Fishin24 Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 What about the brand redhead? Isn't that the house store brand from BPS all they're hunting gear seems to be somewhat on sale as I figure hunting gear would most likely keep you warm as well right? Depending where you hunt of course but I just need clothing that will keep me warm for harsh weather climates. Quote
5fishlimit Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I believe in layering regardless of the outdoor activity. A waterproof shell, a warm mid layer, and a wool or synthetic base layer (never cotton). As far as brands are concerned I really believe that you will get better quality out of more expensive brands, but you also DO NOT have to pay a lot for them. For example: I purchased a Patagonia ultralight down jacket for only $70 on eBay. This jacket retails for $299 at places like REI, Moosejaw, and Campmor. The more you are willing to search for a deal the more likely you will be at finding one. I also can't stress the importance of good wool socks - preferably Merino wool. Once your feet get cold you are pretty much screwed. 1 Quote
Big C Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Check out REI Outlet. Sometimes they have some serious closeouts. Tractor Supply Co. has 20% off all leather boots right now, at least in my local store they may have some online deals going too. DSG has $20 College hoodies. Quote
