tje0705 Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Hey guys. Tis the season of giftcards and I figure I will probably get a few to Cabelas or BPS this year. With these I am planing on purchasing a new reel. I have it narrowed down to either an Abu Garcia Revo STX Gen 2, a Curado I, or a Lews BB1 Pro Speed Spool. I will be using this reel on an Abu Garcia Veritas and will will be using it as a spinnerbait rod. I will be getting this reel in a 6.4 gear ratio. I know these are three really nice reels and they all have their high points. I was wondering what you guys thought would be the best reel for my application of spinnerbait fishing. Thanks for all the help guys. Quote
shaggydog Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 The revo stx would be my choice of the 3. Quote
Weld's Largemouth Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Lews bb1 pro. Super smooth, casts extremely far, durable and strong Quote
IDUTBass Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I can't comment on the other two because I haven't tried them. I really like my curados though. I think you will be happy with any of them. 2 Quote

bass raider Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I say curado. I haven't found another reel yet that is as smooth and powerful as it is. 3 Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted December 16, 2015 Super User Posted December 16, 2015 Pick one that fits in your hand and feels good on the rod. Done. 1 Quote
Super User deep Posted December 16, 2015 Super User Posted December 16, 2015 If you like Abu Garcia reels, get the Revo. If you like Shimano reels, get the Curado. If you like Lews reels, get the Speed Spool. 4 Quote
illinifan4152 Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 Have not used the Abu Garcia or lews, but I do own a couple curado I's. Let me tell ya, best bang for your buck in a reel in my opinion, especially if you can pick one up new for $120-130. Super smooth, casts a mile, and built like a tank. Definitely gets my vote. 1 Quote
largemouth01 Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I always recommend lews reels i feel they are the best quality and value for baitcasters, this is all my opinion though. just get the one you have confidence in! best wishes... Quote
21farms Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 curious why you'd want a gen2 revo STX? i doubt cabelas or BPS carry the previous model anymore as abu-garcia moved the revos to gen3 back in 2012. in any event, i'm a tackle junkie and have had 'em all. i've owned every generation of revo and i have 8 of the free abu-garcia sweatshirts that came with them to prove it. i've owned multiple curados from every generation going back to the greenie curado Bs. back in the 70's when i was just a teen, i had two of the original lew's BB1s and so it was only natural for me to get one of the "new" BB1s and, of course, i had to get a BB1 pro too. of the three choices you listed, i'd strike the STX off your list. IMHO, it's the most over-priced for what you get. the handles are a ridiculously short 80mm, the tiny centrifugal brakes wear out really fast and need to be replaced often, the finish rashes far too easily, the line guide is small and difficult to get to and i've had multiple issues with the thumb bar sticking. the curado i is a fine reel as all my curados have been. they stay feeling great for a long time and are just simple, solid fishing machines. the 84mm handles are an "okay" length but the septon power knobs are IMHO the best in the business...they just feel great wet or dry. as with all curados, access to the spool is unfettered and threading line through the guide is a piece of cake. i moved on from the curado i just because i think it's ugly (but that just me). that leaves the BB1 pro. excellent caster, easy access spool and line guide, nicely long 95mm handle, solid finish. the flat paddle knobs aren't everyone's cup of tea but i do find them comfortable and nostalgic. i like the thoughtful little anchor provided on the spindle of the spool for tying braid. the only problem i've had with mine is that it's more important on this reel to keep the brake surfaces clean and lubed or it can squeal while casting. the folks are lews are nice and very helpful too. good luck with whatever you decide. 1 Quote
cddan Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I have the stx 3. I like it for palmabilty. It cast well. I have had issue with the thumb bar. Greasing the thumbar where the thumbar feet touch the frame helped and or using the reel alot. No issue since then. The CuradoI I really enjoy. It casts very well and feels solid. Oil brake drum and set up brakes to your liking and its my best caster. I havent tried the bb1 pro but its next for me. I may even try the bb2 pro for line capacity. There are striper in my bass lakes that reach the 20 and 30 pound marks maybe bigger and they run alot. For now the curadoI is a favorite but the stx palms very nice making hook sets easy. It casts great but the coating on the spool shaft(palm side) has begun to wear off. It has not hurt its performance yet but the reel doesnt seem to be durable enough. The CuradoI bearing on the gear side is sealed into the sideplate making it non removable. I'm not pleased with that but the breaking seems to allow a wide range of casting. Quote
tje0705 Posted December 16, 2015 Author Posted December 16, 2015 That's a typo my choices are between the stx gen 3 the bb1 and the curado. But after reading this I'm leaning nor towards either the curado or the stx Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted December 16, 2015 Super User Posted December 16, 2015 I have heard of thumb bar issues with all the the Gen 3 Abu reels, even the higher end MGX. My vote goes to the Curado I. Quote
21farms Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I have heard of thumb bar issues with all the the Gen 3 Abu reels, even the higher end MGX. My vote goes to the Curado I. my STX had it. my revo rocket has it. my JDM revo eliteIB rocket9 has it. i sent the STX to abu-garcia and they "adjusted the clutch"...dunno if that fixed it or not cuz i got rid of it immediately after getting it back. with the two revos that i have left, i've learned to manually push up on the thumb bar when it sticks...it now only happens maybe once every hundred casts or so and i've learned to live with it. tje0705 Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 Well after reading up here I went with the curado i. I found one on eBay for 105$ shipped. I'll let you guys know how it is when it gets here. 2 Quote
clh121787 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Well after reading up here I went with the curado i. I found one on eBay for 105$ shipped. I'll let you guys know how it is when it gets here. great decision. I've got shimanos that cost almost twice a new curado and though maybe a tad smoother, slightly narrower/ergonomic. More bearings in places that aren't imperative. The return of value is so marginal (I forgot what dvt. Calls this) that I'll never buy another general purpose reel other than a curado. Let's see if the I models hold up like the previous generations. I've got D's, E's and I's. Missed the boat on the G series. Due to other people's opinions although I'm sure it's not that bad either Quote
