Super User the reel ess Posted December 14, 2015 Super User Posted December 14, 2015 I got a $50 gift card for Cabela's and I want to put some with it and get a reel in the $80-$100 range. I wish it was for BPS because I'd get a Johnny Morris reel and be happy for 10 years. I have no experience with Cabela's brand, but the reviews seem to be at both ends of the spectrum. What are your opinions of their brand reels? One of the reviews mentions they're made by Daiwa. My experience is that Daiwa's bang-for-buck is just about over-the-top. What other recommendations are there? Quote
cottny27 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Well mine s*cked it was the tournament ZX. I've heard good things about the Prodigy and Verano. 1 Quote
k3bass Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 You don't have to buy a Cabela's brand reel just because you have a Cabela's gift card. They have other brands. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 14, 2015 Super User Posted December 14, 2015 Well mine s*cked it was the tournament ZX. I've heard good things about the Prodigy and Verano. I have an older Prodigy b/c reel, and yes it was made by Daiwa. A very solid reel. Was talking to an older gentleman yesterday just before leaving the lake, and he mentioned how much he likes his Verano reels. 1 Quote
PitchinJigz Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Daiwa and Okuma both make reels for Cabela's. They're not bad reels at all. I'd go with the Arachnid personally. 1 Quote

Bruce424 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Lews usually has reels that are pretty good for around 100. Same with abu Quote

Puggz Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I would put it towards a Tatula 100. 6.3:1. I believe you can pick one up for about $100 on sale 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I picked up a Lew's LP1SH at Cabela's for well under $100 and love it. However, it is geared at 7.1:1 with 31in. line recovery, external brake settings, 10lb. drag and it's only 7.4oz. You may find that a little fast for spinnerbaits, but it really shines when you need to pick-up line fast when a fish is rushing at you. 1 Quote
jignjake Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 For that price range you will not find a better reel than a Lews Laser MG Speed Spool, tremendous quality, performance and durability. I've owned mine for 3 years and it has been a workhorse for me. I think they are going for around $80. 1 Quote

I'm replacing a cheaper reel with a graphite frame. My limited experience with graphite or composite framed reels is they eventually fail and it won't be on a 1/2 lb bass when it fails. I may just have to upgrade to one with a solid alum framed reel. 1 Quote
jignjake Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Well like I said mine has been a very durable reel for 3+ years, but there is a lews speed spool lfs for around $100 that I also own, it is a solid alum frame. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted December 15, 2015 Super User Posted December 15, 2015 Right now Cabelas has the Daiwa Exceler reel on sale for $79.99, it is the new model that was $100 and got a good review from Tackle Tour. These tend to go quick so if I were you I'd grab it now. They have the Verano on sale for $99.99 but only the 5.4 gear ratio and the left handed model. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 16, 2015 Super User Posted December 16, 2015 The Lews TP at $120 would be my first choice if you could come up with the extra $20. $120 for a $200 reel is a very good deal. I paid just a bit more for my like new one several years ago, and feel I got the better part of the bargain. It is the closest Lews to your budget. The Caenan is an $89.99 reel on sale at $39.99. I don't know if the new Prodigy is as good as my older model, but it is $30 off (now $69.99). The Pflueger Supreme just makes your budget. I've owned 2 Trions (same price new) and they preformed very well. (Still have one.) I also own 2 at the other end of the spectrum....Patriarch XTs. Another fine reel, but way out of your budget unless bought used...which isn't going to let you use your gift card. 1 Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted December 16, 2015 Super User Posted December 16, 2015 jump on the lews tp for $120. The only ones still available are left handed retrieves or I would have told him to add a little more and grab one. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted December 17, 2015 Author Super User Posted December 17, 2015 The only ones still available are left handed retrieves or I would have told him to add a little more and grab one. I noticed that. I may just wait until after Christmas. There is bound to be several more on sale as new models come in. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted December 17, 2015 Author Super User Posted December 17, 2015 For the $129 range, the Abu Garcia Revo S has a lot of 5* reviews. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted December 17, 2015 Super User Posted December 17, 2015 Daiwa and Okuma both make reels for Cabela's. They're not bad reels at all. I'd go with the Arachnid personally. ^^This^^ ... I have heard from more than one source - the Arachnid is the way to go (as far as Cabela's) BC reels . A 6:x:1 will be most flexible for a spinnerbait . Quote

There is bound to be several more on sale as new models come in. No, it doesn't work that way. Lews has a new Tournament Pro reel, so the old stock gets priced at a discount and it has actually been on sale for a little while. At the end of the year, all of those that didn't sell will get a heavy discount and this is where the good buys come in, so unless Lews introduces a new TP model at next years ICAST show, you aren't going to this reel or that price again with new models. If you want to get great tackle at really good prices, pay attention to ICAST in July, you'll see which companies introduce new version of their rods, and that means the old version has to go, American legacy was selling Lews HM85 rods for $80 a few months back, when the rod came out it was $199.99, that is something you will see if you know where to look and when to look. Get a list of online retailers of fishing tackle and subscribe to all of their news letters, you'll get every sale right to your email but more importantly, you'll get in on the really big sales and if you happen to be in the market for a good deal, you'll eventually get one.
