If you're using same rod for more than one application (don't hit me bait monkey) that calls for very different lines -- say braid vs mono -- do you carry a spare spool.....or perhaps an extra reel with you out on the water?

Blasphemy! If you have 2 reels, you buy 2 rods. Rookie!

In all seriousness I couldn't imagine wanting to ever do that. It would be a massive waste of time to keep swapping reels and/or spools. If you're limited to one rod just put braid on it and tie leaders.

I carry two extra baitcasters that were leftover from upgrading. One is just a spare to have a spare, the other is a spare with 20lb flouro to change out on my fliiping rod if I need it vs braid. Extra spools for spinning reels that come with them. Would I buy a reel just to be a spare? Nope

I have spare spools but it's for when I swap my reel between applications. For one day I fish a tournament and use my reel for the day I use the standard spool.  15lb braid and tie leaders.

I have an extra spool which holds 30lb braid for when I switch things over to pier fishing (saltwater).  Worked well for me on my OBX trip.  Just need to remember to clean the reel when swapping between fresh and saltwater.

Tournament fishing I carried an extra reel with me just incase and for a frog only tournament I carried a spare spool of braid incase I needed to change line size I could swap the spool without changing rods and reel.  Normal fishing, no I don't carry an extra spool or extra reels, just lots of combos.

I carry a spool of #30 braid incase something crazy would happen and I would need to respool. I also carry a couple spools of copoly and fluoro for leaders. That's all I ever need.

I do carry spare line.  I should have been clearer in OP.  I meant extra reel spool(s).  Spinning reels come/used to come with spare spools.  Baitcasters not so much.

Yes ~ I have several extra spools.

Having same Brand & model - (even with different gear ratios) helps and allows for adaptation to just about anything.

This is also a very useful & space saving tactic when traveling (commercial or international air).

Various types of line in assorted test can be easily changed out for immediate usage.

You were clear. I was just saying that I don't carry extra reel spools. I do carry line though. To me braid/leader is a very effective system. I don't have to worry about fumbling around changing out spools. If I accidentally dropped a spool and it hits on the edge I'd of just ruined a $70-110 spool. I do have extra spools from when I upgrade one to say an SV spool but it just gets put in the box.

When the 'monkey' first got hold of me I bought a couple Pflueger reels that came with spare spools.  I had every intention of carrying them with me, but I succumbed to the practice of one reel = one rod and never carry them.

My family thinks I'm bananas....

ADD: I didn't read the post properly.  Spare baitcast spools.. NO.

I AM bananas...

X3.  I have a few extra spools, but have never (yet) carried one with me.  I do carry extra reels with me.  However, they are all attached to rods.  :teeth:

To answer the OP. I have spares from upgrades that I keep in the boat. But with 20+ combos in the boat most days I have something already rigged up that I end up using instead of switching out reels.

DCM I have actually bought a few reels for spares when it has been too good of a deal to pass up. BPS had some nice OKUMA reels on sale for like $70, which was like half off. So I bought a few. Purely as spares for when I wore another out. Then, a week later I had that spare reel on a brand new spare rod. Gotta laugh.

I could see that. It's hard for me to pass up a good sale.  I carry extra rods in the boat also. Spare MF, HF and MH. Just in case one of my Falcons break.

I carry extra reels when fishing tournaments. I had a tournament where I destroyed two reels (not my fault just heavily used reels that died) in practice and had no back ups. Had to go to the local tackle shop and buy another when I had one at home. Now I just carry extra reels with me for every tournament. Also carry extra line in case I ever need to re-spool.

I have spare spools ready to go for my spinning reels. Three of my reels are the same model Daiwa, which helps. I label each spool with a Sharpie "6F or 8M" for 6lb fluoro or 8lb mono. I don't carry spare baitcasters, although I probably could.

I carry spare spool for my spinning reels in case I feel the need to switch. As far as bait casters go I don't. I can make something work with what I've got if something bad happens.

Sometimes. Swapping reels or spools is a pain in the behind though. I just carry more combos unless mobility is extremely important. Then maybe extra reel or spools.

Yes and no, it depends on the situation, for the foot patrol or when I´m limited to carry a certain amount of rigs I do carry spare spools.

I have extra spools for two of my spinning reels but each of the spools on a reel is for a different fish species. I never bring a spare spool with me while fishing. It's too much of a hassle to change an entire set up and I would rather have another setup already at hand. It's also extremely easy to lose as well.

On my 1000 Shimano one spool I have sinking braid for drop shotting while another spool has 6lb monofilament/fluoro for lure fishing for trout. On an Abu Garcia 4500 I have one spool with 30lb braid for light shark fishing in saltwater or bobber fishing for salmon while the other spool has 12lb monofilament for freshwater applications.

No. 90 percent of the time I fish alone. Unless I'm swimbait fishing I carry atleast 5 or 6 rods that will cover me. And I've got twice that many ready to go at home. Even when I'm swimbait fishing I keep a texas rig close by ;)

No I do not

I carried 2 extra reels with me today actually because I only wanted to bring 2 rods. If for some reason I was going to go froggin, I had a beater reel with braid on it that was usable on one of the 2 rods I brought. I had another all fluoro reel but I just stuck with light braid and a leader for the bottom contact.
