Problem With Shimano

As many of the Forum members know, I am a big fan of Shimano reels.

In fact, of all the reels I have, I have only a few brands other than Shimano.

So I take a Shimano spinning reel to Wayne Knabe in Powhatan, Virginia for some service work and Wayne tells me that he now likes Lew's and Daiwa better than Shimano.

My mind is blown.

For years Wayne has sworn that Shimano made the best reels.

And since he repairs all brands he knows which ones are made the best and which ones break the most.

So now when I replace my reels I will be looking at the Lew's and Daiwa reels.

Very uncomfortable feeling to go into unchartered waters with the Lew's and Daiwa products.

The guys and gals on this Forum have written about how they like their Lew's and Daiwa reels so at least I have comfort in valuing what has been written before about Lew's and Daiwa reels.

Changing habits and comfort levels can be so darn difficult.

Curious as to his reasoning, Sam.

 

There's one thing I love about my Stradics, and 

it is the direct drive handles. I don't know if the 

higher end Daiwa reels have it. And I'm speaking 

of spinning reels here...

 

I spoke with two repair shops locally here in the 

last year about Daiwa repair, and they both said

they'd rather repair Shimano because the parts 

are easier to get, but Daiwa's aren't (among other 

reasons)....

 

I'm curious as to DVT's thoughts on the matter.

 

But I do like my Daiwa Lexa 2000SH and my BC

Lexa. Both have been given to one of my sons 

though. I like the Stradic FJ and Chronarch 50e

reels so much better.

 

Might be a different story if I was comparing a 

Zillion and Ballistic to the Chronarch and Stradic

though....

While I am a Shimano faithful, I will say that the Ballistic and Procyon are both very good reels as well.

My spinning reels are few.  One Shimano.  Majority Daiwa.  Advantage 2000A is the newest and it is a few years old.  I haven't used them enough to form an opinion.  My most used spinning reel is an old Penn 430 SS....only because I had it back in the days when a spinning reel was all I knew how to use.  Hardly ever use a spinning reel these days.

 

Maybe you will become a Daiwa fan.   Oh, the shame of it.

Im not brand loyal, but I do love my Lews and Daiwa casters. However when it comes to spinning reels, I do love Shimano, granted I have not tried Daiwas upper range of spinning reels.

I love my jdm certates! I just recently bought 2 new luvias reels. Both these reels are much better than anything shimano offers in the same price range imo.

I do like my stradic fj's but like my daiwa spinners much better. I still kick myself for not buying as many fuego a's as possible when daiwa discontinued them. Awesome reels!

Now I like lews casting reels but haven't liked their spinning reels at all. I would like to try one of their new spinning reels though.

I love my Lew's reels, and I only have the lower tier models (Speed Spool and Tournament MB).

Sam I can't suggest that you change your reel service guy because I don't know him. I will tell you he may be talking about spinning reels but not all reels.

I think that shimano makes the best casting reels but I prefer Diawa spinning reels especially the certates. I have five of them including two of the mag seal reels. They have been flawless performers for me.

Take my advice with a grain of salt because you know I am a big ten supporter not SEC.

I grew up in a Shimano house. But over the least couple years we have had too many recurring problems with their mid level spinning reels. The bait-casters, as usual, are very solid.

 

The Shimano name was always one of quality and dependability, and while they have not gotten worse, many companies really stepped up their game to challenge them, and many of them have better customer service in my experience. At this point, unless I go high-end Shimano, I will be looking elsewhere, but to each his own.

 

Always do what works for you. In the end, that's all that matters.

Daiwa and shimano are on par with each other. Daiwa makes a more expensive product while I think shimano makes a longer lasting one.

I don't see enough reason to make the switch. Would be an expensive move for very little upgrade...

I stay away from Lews. And I stay even farther away from Abu Garcia. And I put them on the same level

My friend in Powhatan who repairs reels gave me his opinion and I wanted other input.

I've had the exact opposite. I needed parts for two Shimano's and could not find them at all. I needed parts for an very old Daiwa ProCaster and Daiwa promptly had the parts shipped to my door. Just my experience though.
