fishing365 Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 I am looking for a crankbait rod but I only have a limited amount of room in my boat for rods and I don't usually don't fish with crankbaits much compared to other lures. So I'm trying to find one do-all crankbait rod. I throw shallow cranks down to 1/4oz and deep divers up to 1oz. I know it is nearly impossible to find a rod to cover both ends of the spectrum well but I am considering the 7'11" Veritas Winch Heavy power. It is rated for lures 3/8 to 1.25 ounces. I am hoping the longer length with a moderate action will allow me to throw the light 1/4oz baits reasonably well while maintaining the power for deep divers. Does anybody own this rod that could weigh in? I know I probably won't get the distance with the small cranks that i could with the medium power but do you think it would work for the few times I throw 1/4oz cranks? Or would the 7ft medium be a better all-around rod? Thanks in advance for the advice Quote
Karsonclowers Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I say get a medium or medium heavy crankin rod. I have a mh duckett ghost and I can throw what ever crankbaits I want on it. I always just use 12 lb mono. U could use 10 lb too. Fluro is good for cranks too Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted December 7, 2015 Super User Posted December 7, 2015 I have a 7'10"MH and I woundn't think of trying to throw small cranks on it....too much rod. It's like trying to use your flipping rod to fish a 1/4oz dropshot. I do have a 7'4"MH though that will fish both. Originally got it to throw SK large squarebill, but it does handle smaller baits (3/8 is a light as I've thrown on it)very wll and can handle the bigger baits too. Both are Quantum Tour KVD cranking series rods. The 7'4" lends itself to both applications but you can try a longer rod, but may be disappointed in the performance. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted December 7, 2015 Super User Posted December 7, 2015 I do NOT have that rod. However, I have a different 7'"11 H rod and I have serious doubts about the effectiveness of throwing 1/4 oz anything on a 7'11 H rod. I know of no rod that will throw throw both 1.5's and 6XD effectively. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted December 7, 2015 Super User Posted December 7, 2015 I bought this rod on clearance at my local shop over the summer for $45 out the door (talk about a steal). I had no use for it, but I can never pass up a great deal. I've only used it two days on the water and I used it for throwing a 3/4oz. spinnerbait. It's a big stick and certainly isn't something that I would consider an "all around" cranking rod. You're better off getting a 7' or 7'6" MH rod for this application. A heavy power cranking rod (especially at 7'11") is not ideal for smaller cranks like squarebills/DT4/Shad Raps because its too powerful and the long length makes it extremely difficult to be accurate with. Fried Lemons Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I've never used it before but the phenix x10 is rated for lures 1/4-1oz. Tackletour seems to support this though. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewphenixx10.html Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 7, 2015 Super User Posted December 7, 2015 Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ I think you already have realized that when talking about an All In One rod, especially when it comes to Crank baits, there's a decent chance you'll have to sacrifice something. Whatever you choose, it can only really be decent at one end of the bait weight spectrum, but not both. So pick something that will take care of business with whatever size baits you feel you'll fish the most and be happy with that. When you fish the other baits, if you don't get bit, well then at least you can blame the rod. A-Jay Quote
fishing365 Posted December 8, 2015 Author Posted December 8, 2015 Ok thanks for the answers. I figured that the rod might be a bit overpowered for 1/4oz cranks and underpowered for larger baits like 6xd's. The Phenix rods look nice, but I don't like having to pay for warranty repairs (especially 65 bucks). I was mainly looking at the Veritas Winch rods because of the light weight and the 3 year free replacement warranty. Sounds like I might be better off with the 7' medium powered rod which will throw most of my baits easily, and then if I occasionally throw bigger baits like 6XD's or DT16's I will need to put up with a slightly underpowered rod. Thanks again for the input Quote
Robert Riley Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I have the heavy, I'd say its both under and over powered. I throw my big cranks on a Dobyns 806 and my others on a Veritas 7'6" MH. I think it'd be a good choice to grab that heavy, or the MH. You can definitely throw those cranks in a pinch. Quote

Dobyns kayden 735cb or Dobyns fury 705cb the kayden is more apt for this application and it does really well with both the 6xd does tend to fish better on a rod like the 805cb but for squarebills you usually want a shorter rod for more accurate casts the Dobyns is a medium heavy but is somewhere in between other brands med heavy and medium the 805 is one of the best 6xd rods ever made and while I don’t own a kayden 735 cb it’s the same action and I’m sure would do great for 1.5s+ I would say I like to throw the rock crawler 50s and 55s 1.0 squarebills and I like them on a 4 power Dobyns cranking rod as well as a series 3 -4-5 when I step it up to a 5xd or 6xd a 1.5-2.5 square bill and maybe even the bigger dredgers up to a dt16-18 and if I have too an 8xd I’ll throw a 5 power and for 8 and 10 xd I don’t throw them much but if I did it would be a 6 power if I had to advise you an all around cranking rod it would be a Dobyns kayden 735cb or if you want a longer rod a champ 765 cb if you go with a 805 it’s only purpose really is deep cranking and really anything over 7’3 feels odd for squarebills and smaller cranks if you wanted you could choose a glass rod but to me they feel too noodley but lots of pros like the glass cb rods I do know Keith combs talks about his main rod for everything from 1.5 sq bills to > 1/4 oz lipless all the way up to a 6xd being a zodias 7’2 medium heavy glass and when he throws 1.0 1/4 lipless series 3-4 on a 7’ zodias medium glass and 8 and 10 xds on a 7’6 heavy glass so you have options personally I would go with the kayden 735 for your applications or something similar to a 7’3 medium or medium heavy graphite moderate or glass depending on what you want from it I like graphite so I can snap my baits pause my baits without waiting 5 seconds for the rod to unload and I like the sensitivity and power of graphite however if your fishing open water and your not worried about muscling a fish a glass rod would suit you well too Quote
