dman Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 hey guys, just looking for advice on how to do this for a new lure....Can i just spray paint and clear coat? Or do i need to strip and prime it somehow to get a nice job? Im just looking to paint a silver PopR all black Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 7, 2010 Super User Posted March 7, 2010 sand the entire lure with 400 grit sand paper, just enough to scuff the surface so your paint sticks, not to take the factory paint off. spray your paint, and clear. Quote
florida strain Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 send it to baitwerks dwain baity does good work..if you dont want to do that than i would suggest to scuff it a bit with a fine grit before you paint and clear Quote
dman Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 Thanks guys...Picked up my supplys today....I'll post pics when im done with it. Of course after the price of the POPr and the supplies I could have got 2 Black Beauty Rico's ;D Will still be a fun project and ill have supplies to mess with other lures Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 7, 2010 Super User Posted March 7, 2010 haha if you like repainting, pretty soon you'll be dropping hundreds on airbrushes, compressors, paints, clear coats, etc... Quote
dman Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 Well, this didnt turn out so good - haha...The sanding and black came out ok, its when i decided to add stripes down the side that everything went wrong...This paint would not hold and kept running off, when it dried it looks cracked - even tried a few extra coats...Heres a few pics, any idea what went wrong and why this didnt work and what i need to do to make it work? BIG M Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 You tried to spary the yellow on too thick. Many thin coats are better than 1 thick coat of paint. Get a hair dryer and dry each coat of paint and you will not have that problem again. Quote
dman Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 Big M, thank u for the reply and the blow dryer idea but i promise you i didnt spray to thick....I was at least 12 inches from the lure when spraying and went side to side with the spray - never pointed directly still on the lure......even this light coat would immediately start running off the lure...the only thing i can think of is the black is a gloss and made it too slick for the other paint to stick ? lightsout Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 a good primer will help it adhere much better Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 9, 2010 Super User Posted March 9, 2010 i dunno what happened but it looks pretty cool! btw, a good primer won't help additional paint stick to the base paint Quote
