Help Is This A Good Setup

Okay so im not a new fisherman but I am new to bigger setups.. My setup right now is a 50$ ugly stick rod and a 40$ abu garcia reel.. Now I'm getting more into bigger stuff, putting more money away for bigger reels and i need help with a new setup.. I fish thick weeds, where if you texas rig the weeds will get caught on the weight. Im looking into a new setup.. I wanted to buy the *** reel *** with 20 pound fireline .. and the rod i want to pair is the st croix mojo bass rod.. IM not sure if this is a good setup like if they'll match up.. I don't know much a lot about every single rod and reel.. But where i fish about 10 minutes down the road is where the state record bass was caught in New York.. And i want a good setup to throw jigs through weeds and be able to do pretty much anything from frogging , to crank baits jigging and some senko setups.. Do you think this will work out well? with some of these i will put a flouro leader, thank you!! Please no hate

St Croix rods are an great choice, [as I am sitting at my keyboard with my St Croix shirt on] The big issue on rod selection is length, action and speed. If you are wanting to throw a little bit of everything with it I would go with a 7 ft medium or medium light, stay with a fast taper, didnt say if you were using spinning or baitcast. I have a abu garcia silvermax that is about as good as my $300 baitcasters, but my go to spinning reel is the Pfluger president.

That said quality rods, like st croix are well worth the money.  I have a g loomis crankbait rod that is way above the feel of the cheaper store brand rods. Dont let anybody fool you with the " I got a $19 rod thats as good as any of them high end ones" Bullcrap, I have fished with all of them in 55 years of fishing, and the is nothing like the feel of a quality rod, st croix or others.  Fenwick makes a pretty good stick to, but st croix is made in the US, if that means anything to you.  Now just sit back and wait for the NO! Thats wrong because thats not what I would does, to roll in!

I felt the Mojo rods were too tip-heavy, but that's in 

my hands. Others like that feeling. As well, the new

Mojo now use the same blank as the Avid, so that

ups the game a little.

 

I had an Avid spinning rod that I sent back for warranty

replacement and ended upgrading to a Legend Tourney

and wow, what a difference. The LT is another level of

sensitivity to my fingers. But at full retail, they go for 

$250 and up. 

 

Not sure what reel you're looking at - casting or 

spinning? Assuming you mean casting, but might want to

clarify for everyone.

Not sure if it was touched on but last years Mojos will sell for a lot less. The models were changed up a bit (blank) for this year. These are great rods for $$$$$$. I don't think you'll be disappointed with either model. I've been fishing a couple spinning models and like them.

I love my Abu Garcia casters. My Pro Max pulls in the 6ers all day and the 30+ in Northerns with no problem. (I wouldn't recommend chasing large fish with reels that aren't made for it though). I got a $30 Abu rod from Wal-Mart (vigilante or something) and works great.

Look at the articles on here about choosing the right action for the job.

MH/F, Fast reel, braid. I went with a Bucoo and a TP 7.1:1, no regrets.

I can't agree with the ML or Medium power rod in the scenario you described.  Yes, it can be done, but I would feel much more comfortable fishing a MH rod under those conditions.  My brother-in-law lives in Florida and fishes Medium power spinning rods with 40# PowerPro.  Tells me he hasn't lost a lure since switching to the PP.  Of course, he goes to the snag if it won't break loose from his casting position.

 

Your reel of choice has been deleted, so I don't know if you are looking for a spinning or baitcast outfit.  I am going to guess it is a spinning reel since you plan on using 20# braid.  I know nothing about the new Mojo series.  You might want to check out ffo (Fisherman's Factory Outlet) for some great deals on Abu and Fenwick rods.  I've never fished a Mojo, but if you are looking for a spinning outfit my first choice would be the 6'7" MHF Aetos spinning rod ffo has for $104.88 (regular price $179.95).  Matter of fact I am considering buying one for my brother-in-law's birthday since he won't spend any kind of money on himself.

the 7" MedHeavy Fast Mojo would be a good choice. Better yet, save up a little more and get the Avid or Avid X. 

 

St Croix MedHeavy is a bit heavier than most other MedHeavy rods from other manufacturers. A St. Crox Heavy would probably be a bit too much for an all around rod.

As for the 20 lb Fireline braid - decent line but I find the thin diameter of the 20lb a little tricky on a casting reel.

 

I'd recommend 30 lb Sufix 832 braid.

Reels in that price range are generally all very decent.  I can surely tell you what I like & why I like it - but that's me.

Models by 13, ABU, Lews, Okuma, Pflueger, Pinnacle, Quantum, Shimano & a few others are all solid choices.

 

Instead of listing the reels I like, my very best advice is to go to your local tackle shop and handle some.  Even better, if you can put the reels you're looking at on the rod you have (or want) at the very least, you'll get a hands on sense of what you're buying.  Try to find out what you like.

 

TW has a DEMO program that allow you to check out some reels for a week without buying it.  Try before you buy -  I've used it ~ it's pretty convenient.

The guys I fish with that are into punching all swear by the Shimano Chronarch. The handle really well with the G. Loomis E6X Flip/Punch Rod 7'5" Hvy and 17lb P Line Halo.

 

I've seen them haul some pigs out of the slop with this exact set up.

You had said you were also wanting to throw crankbaits with this setup, crankbait rods are not heavy rods, also you will want to get the rod in your hand before you buy if you have never handled a certain rod, There is no industry "standard" for rod ratings. One companys heavy is anothers medium heavy, ones fast is medium fast to anothers. Its hard to buy one rod to do everything, but typical jig and worm casters all think you should buy a rod suited for that and compromise on every other aspect.
