How do you bend the wire for the top blade at the open end of the wire? I am trying the find the easiest and most effective way, though about getting it tight and adding a drop of epoxy or jb weld, so the swivel and blade has no way of coming out.

Round nose pliers is what I use.   I bend the tag end past the shaft and use needle nose pliers to bend directly under the shaft.   I've never had a blade come off doing that way.

I don't think epoxy would hold well on spinner bait wire.

I think I know what you mean, but do you have pics? I am more of a visual type of person. Also do you have a particular place you get spinner bodies from? Janns near my house has some nice ones, but I want 1/2oz not 3/8.

I do the same as BigM.  You could add solder at the joint and it would hold.

I don't build my own spinner baits, just like to change blades and modify store bought baits.

HOw did you get it to twist like that? I tried that and I couldnt get it to do that. Maybe I am using the wrong tools.

BTW, that is not my handywork.  I just grabbed the picture because it was easy and clearly shows what I wouldn't be able to describe.  I had seen it used and seemed like a much better way to accomplish what you were trying to do.

From the maker of that bait:

"Round bend pliers and two sets of needlenose pliers. One holds the loop and the other wraps the tag end of the wire around the shaft. Like anything else, it becomes easy with practice."

For myself, after I loose my first blade and swivel, will learn how to do this very quickly. ;)

I have made hundreds in not thousands of spinnerbaits and just make a single bend back to the main shaft. I have never to my knowlegde had a blade fall off. You have to remember that there isn't any pressure coming forward on the blade, it is all going toward the back of the bait. Also, there isn't a fish on the blade it is on the hook(hopefully). If the fish was on the blade then you would definately need a different bend.

FWIW: The person that made these was experiencing that issue.  They were smallie fishing in rivers where good size pike and muskie lurk, and had apparently lost a few blades.  Even though I fish similiar water, never had it happen.

It is definitly a stronger, more perminent, connection, and only down-side I see would be a slight increase of debre it might catch.
