Quantum Hot Sauce Reel Grease

Hello,

 

I'm wondering how you folks feel about the Hot Sauce grease.

 

My biggest problem with greases I've used in the past is that it tends to migrate off the gears.  I was reading reviews on different greases and it appears that this migrates the least.

 

Is this your experience?

 

It was between this, Cal's, and Yamaha blue marine grease.  I went with the Quantum stuff because it can be here tomorrow or the next day due to the vendor being 45 miles from me.

I've always liked superlube grease the best for gears. I can't stand the red crap in the hot sauce oil and grease.

The general consensus amongst our resident reel technicians id that Red Sauce is junk sauce.

I would never use hot sauce ever again. Anymore I only use Hedgehog Studios oils or Shimano Bantam oil.

I think your fine with the Hot Sauce.  I've been using it for years with no issues.

My late great reel service person would charge extra if the reel had hot sauce in it.  My experience is that it won't migrate because it goes solid.  You can do a lot better.

I use Cal's grease and Shimano oil for all of my reels. Cal's grease is the business! I am pleased with the results.

I'll be taking a reel apart here soon that has hot sauce in it.  I'm going to take some pics and post them.  I'm curious how its holding up now.  I am interested in trying some Suber Lube synthetic.

I have not used the grease but have no issues with the oil.

The problem is some people use too much. That's when it gets messy.

A little grease or oil goes a long way.

I was actually looking into this today, and came

across Alan Hawk's reel care "guide" and he 

happens to like Hot Sauce, but it is one of his

likes. Also likes the Shimano products, Penn, 

Ardent, Daiwa, etc.

 

For me, I'll stick to my Shimano, Ardent oils, and

Ardent grease. Probably pick up Shimano greases

at some point down the road.

The problem is not the substance in and of it self is bad, rather the red color and dye left behind. I can see the logic as in the color will allow someone to see where the product has been applied and where it has not. I watched a friend use it in a few of his reels for a year. He said it seemed to have made a mess of the insides in terms of dying things. It required more of a detailed cleaning to remove it.

If colored dye in reel oils was that great or beneficial you would see more companies using it.

I think the dye is a metal bonding process it actaully bonds with what ever it touches.i use rem oil and penn grease.

Yeah, I think that the Hot Sauce Grease gets a bad rap for just the staining of the red dye.....If you only put it on the gears then its not that big of a deal because its on the inside anyway.....some people have said that it hardens, or is tacky, but I haven't seen this and I've used it many times. I think its just a small complaint someone had that has gotten blown out of proportion.

It will seep out of the reel eventually even if you use just a tiny bit and will stain everything it touches. Seems to me that oil or grease that stains everything red is a pretty good reason for it to earn a bad rap.

I've been using it for a couple of years with no complaints.  I wasn't really looking to buy it, but it came in a kit with the Hot Sauce oil for a good price, so I tried it.  Previously, I used MiliTech grease.  It is a light but very sticky grease that works well and stays in place.  I'll pick up more of it at some point.

As  someone who services and repairs reels for others, I would never use the "red" stuff in any of their reels. Experimented with it for a period some years ago, in my own reels, and was not impressed with the damage caused by dying the internals.

Impossible to get clean, even using a US cleaner. Shimano plastics are meant to be white not  PINK !

Shimano drag grease has stayed put the best of several brands I've tried.

It was a tossup between this and Shimano. I went with the Quantum because it'll get here faster, but I do want to try both eventually.

Nothing I grease in my Ambassadeurs spins so fast as to throw the grease off. I am more concerned about temperature resistance and staying put under friction. I don't use a lot of grease at all; pinion and main are the only gears to get it, and only the teeth on those.

If your grease is migrating you're using too much. Anything more than a film between mating surfaces is wasted. Hot sauce grease is horrible as it gums up as had been stated. Any of the greases you use now are good.

The stuff I'm using now is not a grease, per se.  It's engine assembly lube, which is excellent in most applications I've put it, especially firearms slide rails.  In fact, it seems excellent in the reel itself for certain applications; I really like it on carbon drags, for example.

 

It does not do well inside bearings or on gears.

 

This has mostly been an experiment with newer lubes.  Prior to this, I just used old tubes of Abu Garcia grease I had laying around.  They've since dried out, though.

 

I'll try the Hot Sauce as I have it ordered, apply it sparingly, and see what happens.  I'll be placing an order for Shimano grease soon, too, to apply to another reel.  Whichever works best for me will go in all the reels when I'm done 'playing'.

Penn was another I was looking at online.  When researching it, I could only find references to saltwater anglers packing their reels with it, so I skipped it.

I found some Ardent Reel Butter locally.  Yellow grease stuff.
