When I was a teacher I moonlighted at the local Cabela's - really enjoyed my time there. I worked in the always wonderful Bargain Cave, but ventured out to the Fishing section often to help customers.

I know hootie worked at BPS and pretty certain Bluebasser worked at cabela's

i think aside from the crazy holiday shopping days it would be a good side gig just for discounts alone

I worked at gander mountain for 8 months during college. It was a decent college job, the pay was minimum wage, but the discounts were pretty good, we were able to combine our discount with sales which made for some really good deals. There is a lot of pressure to sell credit cards and extended warranties.

5 years at Cabela's in KC until I turned 21 and became an LEO (2002-2007). It was my full time gig for the first 3 years, then I went to part time while I was working in construction for the last 2.

What are you doing now, just curious! Also, thank you for your years of public service.

I worked at BPS for about 5 years. The local BPS just cut their management team in half. The department managers now oversee 2 departments. Corporate office/store manager gave no warning. When managers showed up for work they were told to see the store manager where they were fired. They were then escorted to their desk, allowed to clean the desk, while being watched, and then escorted to the exit door. This was my first experience with retail sales (BTW, I quit) and it still blows my mind. Management has no concern for the employees, zero, nada, zilch. However I do miss the discount lol.

Al, in the past as we progressed through our careers, we saw companies and employees be loyal to each other and people kept their same careers for decades.

Today, the atmosphere is different.

Companies are "cost cutting" and letting the people go who helped build the organization. I  have two business associates who worked for one of my clients for over 30-years and made the organization the shining star it is today. Both were let go  by the new CEO. What a waste of history and how the organization works.

No loyalty any longer. It is the bottom line and companies are letting their brightest and best go to help improve the bottom line.

Who would have thought that BPS needed to cut their management teams in half? Is business that bad? Has BPS over extended its financial load due to expansion? Are computers replacing real people more and more?

Lack of company loyalty to its employees lead me to start my own firm. I can go fishing when I want and many times when my clients call they want to know if I am on the water. No problem. I can address their problems at my desk or in my boat without any problems.

Try doing that if you work for a large company.

Hey, times are changing. We better roll with the punches.

Sam, I'm 68 and no longer have to roll with the employment punches, thank goodness, lol. However, my four sons do and I have trouble advising them in the current work environment. Thankfully I have a younger(than me) brother-in-law that can advise them on these matters. So far this has worked well.

When a good employee of 20+ years walks out the door an incredible amount of knowledge and experience goes with him. This must have an impact on a business with repeated decision errors or mistakes that reoccur. We have all heard the words, "I don't know, Joe always took care of it". The amount of repeated mistakes must be very high which is costly to any business. Oh well, glad i'm retired.

The BPS management cut that I mentioned may just be this store. I do not have insider knowledge of the organization, just friends in management of my local store.

There are still a lot of business closing in this area and what I considered well established businesses, just locking the doors. The economy at least in my area does not seem to be recovering as well as the media is claiming. There is some expansion with auto related support businesses but not much else that I am aware of. Although home construction may be starting recovery. Again, glad I'm retired. Time to see if the crappie are biting....

The wife worked at Gander for 14 years. It's cool at first, but it gets old. Working retail flat out sucks, no matter what discount you get.

I did some stints in retail. I would never go back. I confirmed my hatred for retail when I did some seasonal work at cabelas, for a minute, last holiday season. Nothing against Cabelas but retail is retail. Brutal from both ends (customer and employer). Especially around the holidays. Sh!t gets nuts.

No lie there. Good will towards man my fat fanny. Holiday shoppers are the nastiest of the bunch. Come in 3 days before christmas and tear in to you because you don't have xxx from the ad 2 weeks ago!

Exactly.

I rarely get up at 4am to go hunting or fishing but strolled into work at that hour to be bum rushed by soccer moms who are foaming at the mouth and pumping lates into their veins while raging that there was not enough of the Black Friday deal for all 10,000 people at the store.  LOL I am only poking a little fun here.  I mean no offence to black Friday shoppers.  I can see why some folks might enjoy camping out in front of their favorite retailer, in the freezing cold, instead of eating turkey samiches and nursing a cold brew on the couch.  Only to stand in line for 5 hours for their turn to hand money to some sleep deprived individual who is dreaming of turkey samiches.  Bliss.  :)  Okay Okay I am done.  I really do not have negative views on all holiday and Black Friday shoppers.  To each their own.  Its just not for me, obviously.
