What you using and why?

Looking to update. Need omething good from bank or my jon boat. Needs to be portable for bank foshi g but also carry all my tackle

Backpack, no question. Shore or small craft.

 

Why? Mobility and efficiency. Holds all the essentials. Has all the benefits of a bag, but with shoulder straps, so my hands are free when on the move, hiking or bushwacking. Softsided means it can squeeze into a crate on the kayak no problem.

I have a medium sized soft cloth bag with shoulder strap. I really like it and size but being a shore angler I will be switching to backpack style. Carrying 4-6 rods and keeping strap on shoulder while walking down trail or bushwalking to get to pond can be frustrating. For me strap keeps slipping off shoulder while walking.

Backpack with 3-4 clear boxes in it.

Boat has a gun box which holds my 3 plastic shoes boxes full of plastics (flukes/minnows/grubs, tubes/craws and worms/senkos) and a topwater, spinner/buzz bait, crankbait, and jerkbait box.

I use the magnum bag from Cabelas. It is big enough to Carey most of my tackle for those long fishing trips up north or all day excursions. But I have enough (NOT to much) that I also now have a second bag that I carry only when I go shore fishing.

I like having all my options on me. Because you never know what that lake may call for and what is hot.

I use one of the BPS red bags from the boat.  That usually holds everything I will need for the day.  Walking the bank I like to use a box.  Sticks and rocks won't tear it, and I can go back to the car for a snack or a drink.

Backpack is the way to go. Covers every situation you mention. There are several catering to the angler. I bought one from BPS which holds 4 3600 boxes and all the other essentials with various pockets.

Backpack, I have tried all the options and cannot stand anything else from the bank. In a small boat, I prefer an actual tackle bag, but that's a rare occurence for me. The backpack provides a mobility you won't find with anything else.

I don't fish from the bank much, so I have a tackle bag. It holds more than the backpacks I've seen. When I'm in my boat, I don't use the bag.

I like a bag, the Flambeau AZ8 for any size boat I'm in as it's narrower but a little higher which saves space.

From the bank I just take a small satchel type bag as I don't need as much to bring.

I wade fish the rivers around here a lot, and all I use is a backpack or sling pack.  For the backpack I just use one my kids have retired.  Gives me plenty of space for bait, plus extra pockets to hold snacks, TP, and emergency items separately.

Normally i have all my gear in multiple 3700 boxes and ziplock bags. When i go in my flatbottom, pond fishing, and often in a freinds boat i condense it down to 1 gallon ziplok of my favorite plastics and 1 3700 daybox of my favorite and go to lures for the area and type fishing i will be doing.

I've got bags, boxes, duffles and backpacks.  To answer your question, I highly suggest a backpack.  Check out Field Supply.  I've gotten a number of bags (and other things) from them.  Prices, quality and service are top-notch.  I've carried the SOG Ninja backpack almost every fishing trip - shore, boat, kayak...for the past 15 months and it is like new.  I can get about 20 lbs of plastics in there...or 3 3700's and 5# of plastic...not to mention tools, JJ's, water, etc.

I have put a great deal of research into modifying my tackle storage to become as efficient as possible. I do not claim to be an expert, but I believe I have landed on what works best for me. I fish from the bank 95% of the time and was growing increasing frustrated with carrying my tackle. It's achieving balance with having everything I think I'll need and not being overwhelmed with lugging gear all over the place. I eventually copied the Japanese anglers, I believe they got it right with fishing from the bank. Go on YouTube and watch some vides of Ken Iyobe and Hata Takuma. They keep a tackle store in their vehicles, but take a limited amount up to the lake.

When I fish the bank:

I keep 4-6 rods in my car and a Plano Guide Series 3710 and (2) 15 quart weather proof containers with various soft plastics in my trunk.

Based on conditions and a brief once over of the lake once I arrive; I choose 2 rods, 3 at most, and stock a Umpqua Ledges waist pack full of various lures, plastics, and terminal tackle. If I need more than what will fit in the waist pack then I'm just over complicating my day. The waist pack was designed for fly fisherman, but it works perfectly for all fishing and has become my most important piece of bank fishing gear. They are worth the money, very well built and comfortable. I believe they're still on sale at Backcountry. I hope this helps. I share your frustration and my solution.

I fish from a kayak so i use a milk crate to hold all of my stuff.  When i go out shore fishing, I use an old timbuk2 bag if i am using my conventional gear.  When fly fishing i have a chest pack that holds all my stuff and then some for a day on the water.

Must be very little tackle, to carry "all my tackle" I need a truck.

If you can fit all your stuff in a box that is not too unwieldy, then there are some good options out there. I've liked the Plano Guide Series boxes as they have variable compartment sizes that can make for a useful box.

 

I couldn't possibly carry all my stuff so I keep it in an Umco "Possum-belly" box, several large duffle-style bags, and lots of spill-over compartmented boxes. I then use a box or a backpack for excursions.

 

I've liked best:

-Plano Magnum suitcase-style boxes.

-A backpack. I couldn't find one made for fishing that I liked -with enough pockets and compartments- so I went to REI and found one there.

I use a backpack as well. I have it pretty much set up like the one in the video link below although I don't normally carry as much soft plastic. For me the key is the plano 3601 shallow boxes. they work really great and are the perfect size for a backpack.

I fish 100% from shore and it's backpack all the way.  Fishing from shore you don't have electronics to rely on so you're usually doing a lot of walking to cover water/find structure so being mobile while being able to fish is key.  Schlepping around a bag or box from shore while using your two hands to fish would drive me insane.  As long as you're fishing a familiar body of water, you should be able to fit what you know works into a daypack.

I'm lazy too and the backpack helps with that.  I use the backpack all season long and keep it loaded with all the bass gear (license, first aid stuff, pliers, bogagrip, leader line, sunscreen, scents, etc), I only mess with it to restock terminal tackle/plastics/snacks, or to swap out any baits as the season changes or if I'm trying a different spot.  Most of the time when I wake up in the morning I just grab the bag, fill up a water bottle, and I'm out the door.  Just don't unpack the bag after each trip.

When I'm out on someone else's boat I'm partial to the Plano 3700 bags. I can fit a ton of tackle in there yet keep it clean and organized out on the deck. I imagine a backpack system could be similar, but admittedly I've never had one.

Bring my tacklebag with me in the jon boat, use one of my kids old school backpacks when bank/creek fishing...
