I use a 30# hand control up front on my canoe. The 1-5 is fine for moving along but for slow trolling it suffers. It's just to quick even on 1.

Does anyone know of a replacement for the 1-5. I'd like to convert it to variable.

Thanks in advance:)

Not sure, but believe the cost would be prohibitive. Haven't had a small trolling motor in years, but think I got mine for $100.00. I would buy a variable one instead, as the cost difference would be nominal in my opinion between buying a replacement variable drive and selling the trolling motor and buying a variable. If money is tight, then I can see our point. But to me, its a no brainer to buy a variable.

Wayne, I, too have looked for ways to make

a 30 a variable thrust motor. I've got a Minn

Kota C2, and there are kits out there, but it

seems you have to be a dealer or something

to get them.

I reference BassYaks.com who gets the kits

and offers them with their own kits.

Not sure there are many options out there.

You could find you one of these

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Minn-Kota-MAXIMIZER-electronic-power-control-trolling-motor-battery-life-extend-/221953561674?hash=item33ad76944a:g:W-UAAOSw7FRWWdP2&vxp=mtr

I still have one I bought when they first came out and that price is more than I paid for mine new.

Too bad they don't still make TM batteries with the lead buss bars on them. You could just clip on to the one of those that gave you the speed you wanted.

Tie a rope to a bucket and drag that to slow down your troll. Drill holes in the bottom to make recovery easier when you want to pull it back in.

I saw something online for $100.00. I don't see where I can buy a 30# variable. Looks like Id have to step up to a 40#.

Retrofits can be a pain in the butt..

A good last resort..

Mines a 30# Minn Kota C2 like Darrens, I may step up to the 40# depending on weight. The MotorGuide Bulldawg looks tempting. 40# foot controlled. I've had my eye in one for a while.

I held back from buying because It's not a variable.

You could try to find an old 4 blade ninja prop for motorguide and try to make that fit. The short blades were awesome at going through grass, but you lost a lot of speed in open water with them, so trying to make one fit might be worth a shot. You could probably reshape the blades on your current prop too.

Here's the deal. I'm in heavy cover a lot. I need power and a weedless prop. I have the edge on the 30 which pulls great in that junk. I want to slow down when I'm in open water working shore lines ect. Good thought though, Thx for that.
