I hear and read about people having their reels super tuned.  What does that process actually entail?  Is it a more thorough cleaning, or upgrading the drag, bearings?

Just curious?

Upgrading the bearings, drag and the polishing of certain parts. Ian Shields aka eBassfisher over at Tackle Tour has the reputation as being the best around at super tuning.

Get with Mike over at DVT and ask him to super tune one of your older reels. You will then understand what it is.

I've done several of my reels.  Its a lot of labor for a low cost IMO.  Almost easier to just send off your reels.

Personally I consider supertuning to be the polishing of the friction points of casting reel. Generally I think of new bearings and drag washers as "upgrades" since you are replacing stock parts with new aftermarket parts. Flushing spool bearings and a thorough cleaning are more of maintenance thing.

It means different things to different folks similar to describing the characteristics of a rod.

Super Tuning is polishing of friction pints that affect casting. Bearings, drag etc are supplemental upgrades that can further enhance reel performance. Reels with free floating spools like many Daiwas and Revos do not benefit from super tuning yet many shops will still sell you the service. I will not. If you have model specific questions feel free to contact me.

I like that thinking.
