5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 How do you all deal with that guy or gal that only calls to get a ride on your boat to fish? I have a tighter group of friends and we all do for sure that we chill with a lot. However some people that I still consider friends (just not as close) seem to only call or text me when they want a convenient time to fish off the back of my boat. One guy in particular I won't talk to for weeks at a time then all of a sudden "hey man when are we going fishing?" 2 Quote

Big C Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 don't have that issue but i fish out of a kayak What about a two man kayak? Those things are terrible to fish out of, even when it's with somone you half-way like! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted November 28, 2015 Super User Posted November 28, 2015 What about a two man kayak? Those things are terrible to fish out of, even when it's with somone you half-way like! they don't call tandem kayaks and tandem bikes divorce makers for nothing....we sold kayaks at the outdoor store i used to work at. Every year we would have a few couples come in and order a tandem. I tried my hardest to talk them out of it and say just get 2. every single tandem we sold either the couple stopped using it or they came in and bought two singles.... 1 Quote
Ski213 Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 As said above, I cull "friends" by telling them I'm excited to have someone chipping in on fuel. They're usually still down till I tell them just how fuel efficient the boat is. In reality I'd never require someone to share fuel costs but it sure does turn off a lot of people who are looking for a free ride. But having said that. I don't care a bit to take someone out who loves to fish but doesn't have a boat and really can't afford to help with fuel. Quote

I'm certain they can afford fuel. However they seem to actually get kinda "pushy" when it comes to asking "when are we going". In any event info have other friends who seem appreciative. :-) Quote
Ski213 Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Just invite the pushy folks out on a miserable kind of day and keep them out all day. Driving rain windy kind of day. Mid 40s. The kind of day when you can't buy a bite and it's miserable even trying. You'll quickly separate the people that love to fish from the people that love to ride around on your boat. 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 28, 2015 Global Moderator Posted November 28, 2015 Tell them you need $XX to cover gas, oil, time right up front. I'd suggest a little more than what it actually cost for the entire trip. I can put up with about anyone if they want to drop $80-$100 to fill my truck and boat up just to fish a local lake. Quote
BKeith Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I can't afford to have friends that fish, I have too many in-laws that my wife thinks I should take. They can't fish worth a darn and works my butt off chasing hung up lures. On top of that, because they are relative's, she don't think you should dare suggest they chip in on expenses, and they are too sorry to ever offer.. 1 Quote

Josh Smith Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 ... I prefer taking peole who help with cost and bring their own tackle lol. How do you even fish with another's rods and tackle? I've tried and can't do it. Some have been nice rigs but I can't. Worse, I can't explain why! I'd feel foolish in another's boat, too, if I made the call to go out fishing. I mean, I'd want to at least be able to say something like, "Hey man, go fishing this weekend? How about Salamonie? My deep v will do better out there, or we could go to Hominy Ridge and take your jon boat." You know, not back the guy into a corner where he feels he must take his boat out. That's rude. In fact, since my boat's been down for an overhaul, I've not called anyone with a boat to go out fishing. My parents taught me that inviting ones' self is the height of rudeness. Then again, when my boat is finally repaired, I can see myself inviting random bank fishermen to come out. I thought through this while watching a teenage bass fisherman fish a frog on the opposite bank of the small lake this past summer without much success. I would have told him to jump into the boat had I had it up and running as that's how the lily pads are accessible. These three years without the boat have been hard, and I'm thinking more and more that when it's repaired, I'll use it quite a bit to help out young anglers who can't afford their own yet. Guys, I am sick and therefore rambling. Those on certain gun boards know I do this. I apologize if anything I've said makes less sense than most times. Josh 1 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted November 28, 2015 Super User Posted November 28, 2015 I have the opposite problem. I have trouble finding people to go with me. Maybe it's me? 3 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 28, 2015 Super User Posted November 28, 2015 The solution is simple, unfriend them. Exactly this. If you never hear from the person aside from when they want to go fishing then ignoring them shouldn't cause any issues. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted November 28, 2015 Super User Posted November 28, 2015 If we're being honest here, I prefer to bass fish alone or with my son. No drama and we fish well together. I have a buddy I fish the Wisconsin River system with. We can spend all day on the water and not say a word to each other except to discuss what spot to go to and bait choice. No Drama there either. Fishing with my dad is the same way. Fishing is a passion I have. A challenge between predator and prey. My happy place. I don't need others to ruin that for me 8 Quote

Might just text back "please call 918-555-1234"......the number for a local boat sales center. Let them get their own boat. rchiuz Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 How much would it cost to pitch in? I mostly just bank fish. The only time I was on a bass boat when I went with a guide. Just curious.. Quote

The only time I was on a bass boat when I went with a guide. Just curious.. Splitting fuel, ramp fees, and buying lunch would be acceptable to most. Personally, I think it's rude to ask someone to use/share their stuff. It puts the person who owns the stuff in an awkward position. The way someone asks would have a lot to do with my response. Someone who says "When we going fishing?" will get a different response from me than "Tomorrows going to be a nice day. If you're not doing anything, How bout I pick up some beers and a couple steaks? Fishing on your boat in the morning and steaks on the grill and cold beer at my house in the afternoon" 1 Quote
