Scorchx1245 Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 I had my hummingbird 597 cdis stolen off my boat....literally in 20 mins of me helping a friend whose truck rolled after the ebrake failed on his manual truck. I normally lock and stowe them but once I saw his truck roll into the water past the door seams I had to help. Long story.... luckily his truck and boat are fine just a little wet. Anyways I got some money from my ins. And thinking about upgrading. Is side scan worth it? The helix isn't linkable but I want way point sharing and am on a slight budget due the holidays. Anybody got ideas? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted November 27, 2015 Super User Posted November 27, 2015 Look at the posted screenshots above. The Helix 5 and 7 series are not linkable, but the Helix 9, 10, and 12 series are. There are close out sales on Humminbird, Garmin, and Lowrance units now for discontinued models. Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted November 27, 2015 Author Posted November 27, 2015 Would you think that the average tournament angler would benefit for having sidescan or would down imaging suffice cause I only want DI for the front but want SI for the console...so torn weather or not to shell out the money. Super User Wayne P. Posted November 27, 2015 Super User Posted November 27, 2015 I don't tournament fish, but want my time on the water to be the most efficient. I use Side Imaging at the console and bow. I want to see "over there" no matter what location on the boat I am. I use SI at the bow a lot more than at the console since that is where I am most of the time and the SI view is the one I use 90% + of the time. I don't use Down Imaging for fishing at all and certainly not for searching due too the lack of coverage. I only turn it on to take screenshots for teaching purposes. I have four Side Imaging units on my boat 1 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 27, 2015 Super User Posted November 27, 2015 To me...the SI is better to have for a tournament or weekend angler. Unless you dropshot or vertical jigging and such all the time you are not fishing right below you, you are casting to the side so knowing what is there is key. Quote

I wouldn't sped extra on Di if you are not getting SI. Spend the money on a better 2d unit. A larger 2d with gps/mapping will serve you much better than DI for tourney fishing Quote
MidwestF1sh Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 This was my first year fishing local tournaments with side imaging. The 2 years prior I did not have it and it is crazy how much it helps. You won't realize how nice it is until you have it. Then you'll never want to fish without it. Quote

carlm01 Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 The great thing about the Helix series SI/GPS units ,they have DI and Sonar so you basically have 3 different screens plus GPS .. It gives you all the tools you'll need .. IMHO Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted December 1, 2015 Author Posted December 1, 2015 Awesome thanks for your advice! I'll definitely be getting a SI finder this winter. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted December 4, 2015 Super User Posted December 4, 2015 Awesome thanks for your advice! I'll definitely be getting a SI finder this winter. Wise decision! Once you have it and use it you'll be amazed at what you find and how quickly you find it! What would take a half hour or more to figure out what's in the area will take you 5 minutes or less with si. Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 Hoping someone could tell me how to transfer way points off my bow unit to the driver unit if I get 2 helix 5 models, someone I thought said you just moved the card to console unit ? Quote

If you have two Helix 5 or 7 series units, you can copy/export the GPS data in one to a memory card and load that data to the other unit's memory. The Helix 5 and 7 series have a microSD card reader. The data will not be on the card until you Export it IF you have another Humminbird model that is not an ONIX, you can do the same to copy the data for uploading to a Helix. Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 Perfect! I found 2 helix 5s from BPS 400 each after my discount....worth it? Quote

OK so to be clear...if I buy two helix's I don't need to buy two Lakemaster cards. I can just take one and transfer the data to another blank card... then use the Lakemaster card in one helix and the copied card in the other helix? Quote

If you buy two Helix models with GPS and want Lakemaster mapping in both, you need TWO Lakemaster map cards. Do NOT use a map card for the data transfer. GPS is not map data and mapping is not GPS data. Once you EXPORT/copy the GPS data and load it to the other unit, you REMOVE the card. At no time does the unit use the waypoints on the card. The card is for data transfer from one unit's memory to the other unit's memory. The Helix 5 and Helix 7 models have a single memory card reader, you cannot have a map card in the unit and do the waypoint transfer. Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted December 19, 2015 Author Posted December 19, 2015 Humminbird® Helix 5 SI GPS, 400 a piece shipped. So I have to have 2 copies of lakemaster and just have a extra micro SD card blank, to transfer data? Got it! Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 19, 2015 Super User Posted December 19, 2015 Yes and make sure your Lakemaster purchase is the 2015 issue. This year is the first time Lakemaster used microSD cards. Don't go shopping for old bargins, they won't work. Quote
