illinifan4152 Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Hey everyone, pretty new to A-Rig fishing but am looking to put together a setup for next spring. I was wondering what you all prefer. I have been reading numerous reviews. I'm a Shimano guy so I will prob go either with a curado 300e, Cardiff, or one of my 200e series reels. I have see both preferences on slower vs higher gear ratio but that seems to mainly be for keeping baits off the bottom?? One thing I can't seem to decide on would be line. Some throw braid and some through mono/copolly. I live in the north east so most of the water I fish is fairly clear. That being said I would assume I would start with copolly and see where I go from there? Probably 20lb mccoys xtra clear. I would still like to hear suggestions on what you guys prefer, especially on a rod selection for under $200. The rig will most likely be a 5 wire with 1/8-1/4oz jig heads with skinny dippers/keitechs/swimming fluke on it. Thanks!! Quote

Super User gulfcaptain Posted November 25, 2015 Super User Posted November 25, 2015 I fish mine from shore and use it as if it were a big spinnerbait. So being you're heads are close to what I fish (mine are all 1/8 or 1/16 with 2 dummyheads to be legal)so here is my set up I used the last couple years. I fish a 7'6"MH BPS cranking stick (older model) and I fished it with a Carbonlite reel (which has been upgraded to an EXO 200) in the 5.1 gear ratio and believed it gave me about 22-24 IPT which let me wind the 5 wire bladed A-rigs with less fatigue. Fished 3-4" Kietech Swing Impacts and used a 6-8ft leader of 20lb mono with 30lb braid. I liked the softer action of the rod to keep the fish pinned since the baits I were using had the Kietech tungsten heads and 3/0 wire hook which held better then the Owner ball heads did and would still bend out if I needed to pull it free. I used stronger hooks in the beginning but after loosing a few rigs, I switched to a lighter wire hook and the Kietechs were the best of those I tried. I do have another rod (BPS 7'6"MH Bionic Blade 2010 model) I use if I'm lake fishing and need a stiffer rod to fish heavier hooks and heads but same reel and line setup. Quote

illinifan4152 Posted November 26, 2015 Author Posted November 26, 2015 I'm considering a dobyns fury 795. Has anyone had experience with this rod or even the champion 795? Will it be suitable for a rigs? Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted November 27, 2015 Super User Posted November 27, 2015 The Fury swimbait model hasn't been out very long and there isn't much written about it. A buddy of mine bought one. The first thing he commented on was it would double as his A-rig rod. He had planned on using the 765 Flip but the retail price was too affordable and he bought both. My experience with the Fury line is with a 735C and a 733C. My nephew picked up the 705CB and 765Flip. They are well made, balanced and sensitivity is is not Champion level but not that far from it. I would at least throw it in the mix. The price is right. Quote
TNAndy Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 I just bought a champion mike long 795 from a member here and used it for the first time yesterday. My primary purpose for that rod is going to be the rig. It's a very sweet rod for it based on my initial outing. You can actually cast the bait with it instead of having to feel like you have to lob it. It has a nice soft tip still. The fish I cought were buttoned up very well. I have not fished the fury, but I really was impressed with that champion. It's my first dobyns I have owned. Quote
MONKEYMAN Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 I just got a g-loomis E6X 7'5" heavy flipping/pitching rod (for 40% off) and it is great for the a rig. It has just enough tip to make the cast then when your retrieving it has enough power to not wear your arms out. Quote
DesertBass Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Don't mean to advertise but I have a brand new(tags still on it)7'11 shimano crucial swimbait model I am looking to unload.Would make a perfect A-Rig rod, rated 1-3 oz.Let me know if you want it I'll make you a good deal! Quote
looking4structure Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 I've been using a Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 Winch 7'11" Extra Hvy paired with a Lews LFS SSG1S 5.6:1. I really like the combo. Under 200$ before tax. As for line I've been experimenting. I wasn't a fan of braid for this application but i know alot of guys really like it. Copoly has been the deal for me. P-Line CXX moss green 20lb has done wonders for me. I also throw swimbaits and big cranks on this setup. 8XD, 10XD ect... I really want to try a 300 series reel next spring. Quote
