Dock Skipping Rod

I have a 6"6 medium fast action veritas rod and was wondering if it would be any good for skipping with finesse jigs and wacky rigs. I would have a chronarch 200e7 with 20-30 lb braid and a floro leader paired up with it most likely.

I personally like to use a spinning reel/rod when skipping - wacky rigged senkos. I usually pitch/flip jigs around docks and use a baitcaster.

Unless super clear you shouldn't need a leader.

You can skip with anything if you get accustomed to it

Allow me to agree with Montanaro, but side with Dypsis.

 

You can skip with either, but you'll have more success 

using spinning gear. I consider myself pretty good with 

my bait casters. I've spent time learning to skip and such,

but it is just that much easier with spinning. 

 

In my humble opinion.

 

That said, a ML rod that loads good will work on the casting

side.

 

I can skip with just about any rod on the spinning side.

For baitcasters...i have more success skipping with my xfast rod than my modfast rod.

I feel the slower action absorbs too much energy while xfast translates my wrist flick straight to the bait.

Other fishermen will have opposite opinion.

I am the opposite from you but different things work for different people. The thing that would make it tough for you IMO is the reel. Much harder to skip a bait with centrifugal breaks than magnetic breaks from my personal experience.

I like to skip weightless plastics in heavy cover and under docks.  I'm using a St Croix rage medium heavy fast action 7'1" spinning rod with .011 fluorocarbon.  I've tried different dia. line and have found for me .011 is as big as I can go and still be manageable and trouble free.  I prefer Sunline sniper but I tried Trilene 100% XL and I haven't had any problems with line twist so far and is a decent alternative to Sunline.  I like straight fluoro for slack line sensitivity feel.  I have a hard time feeling the bite when I'm letting a super fluke or fat ika sink with braid.  The 7' rod gives me plenty of backbone and leverage when I'm trying to get a big fish out from under a dock.  I went with the MH action for the simple reason that I'm looking for big fish and I want plenty of rod if I hook a large fish plus I can set the hook with authority.

Sounds good. You can't skip a round rock. The bait is what you should focus on. And casting tehcnique make sure to follow through after. I learned with bigger soft swimbaits. And then moved to arkie jigs. And t rigged beavers with pegged weights. Its fun skipping docks and overhangs. And getting looks from people like you just hung the moon. Helps if water is glass. On heavy wind chop you can forget about it. I believe rod and reel are second in importance to skill and bait selection while skipping.
