Super User bigbill Posted November 20, 2015 Super User Posted November 20, 2015 I used south bend Berkley and shakespear fishing rods for decades. Me being frugal. They worked and a made do what I had. I never thought of them as cheap. They worked for me. A few years back maybe a decade I purchased a casting rod. What I thought was a name brand. It's nothing I used before. I took it out two months ago and found out even the reel seat flexes. Save this one for the grandson. I'm sure being 5yo he's gonna break rods. I won't slander the name brand. Its no brand I mentioned here. I never gave the Shakespeare, Berkley and south bend one thought about there decent quality. I'm using the LEWS SPEED STICK spinning rods now. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 20, 2015 Super User Posted November 20, 2015 Big discount stores often have clearance sales on items that don't turn over fast enough in their region. Sporting goods department get rods and reel that may not be good sellers in their store for whatever reasons and into the clearance bin they go when the seasonal changes occur. If you know what you are looking for some top quality rods and reels are often marked down to bargin prices, sometime under $15 just to clear them out. Now is a good time to check your local D house for bargains. I found my Loomis PR845C in a close out bin for $20, retails for over $200. Inshore popping rod perfect for structure spoons and smaller crankbaits. Tom Quote
