I just checked my tracking. Mine shipped out of Wadsworth, Ohio.

Was it a store model display? I don't know, but I'm doubting that it was. I've seen and even bought a few floor display models from DSG before, and most of them do show/look slightly used. However, the Stradic I received looks flawless. It still had the little paper "C" clip on the handle, as well as the clear rubber elbow cover as well that Shimano puts on all their reels from the factory.

Definitely a head-scratcher. Mine shows it's

coming from NJ. If it is "new" but minus the

box, I'll be fine, though I may talk to the local

store manager about it, or send off a note to

their corporate office.

DSG has always been very good to us for

purchases, returns, etc.

I don't plan on returning my reel as of now, because there is nothing wrong with it. However, I will be following this thread to see what the rest of you gentlemen receive. I highly doubt DSG would really be able to do anything as far as a return/exchange because these reels have been discontinued and I knew that when I purchased this reel. If anything, the best they would probably do is give me an in store credit, or they would probably swap me for whatever size they have left in a Stradic FJ, which is probably only the very large 4000+ size reels. I just don't like being deceived, because I assumed I was getting a new in box reel, and not an open box (er... no box) special.

I guess I don't see it as bug of a deal. You are getting a 200 reel for 100. Many people don't keep the box but it sounds like you have everything you needed anyways. It is still warrantied so if you run into problems you are fine there too.

It is part of doing an online sale....if you don't like it then buy it in person, seems pretty simple.

Now this is just nonsense! This isn't ebay, it's a major retailer! When you order something that's new it shouldn't be opened or missing anything period. The fact that's it's on sale or clearance has nothing to do with it. If the reel is missing the box or is a display they should tell you before you order it.

like i said, it isn't a big deal.  If the reel is in the condition you expected and is new as has been indicated, having a box or not isn't a deal breaker for me.  If it is that much of a concern just send it back, easy enough.

I agree, although I do believe DSG should have

indicated as much if these are "open box". That

is on them, and could be considered false adver-

tising, technically.

However, it is an item I wanted, and the price was

too good to pass on, therefore I'm not as concerned

if it has a box or not.

There's always the recourse of returning the product

if one is unhappy, or feeling deceived.

As for me, if it arrives damaged, unboxed, whatever,

I'll do what I need to do with DSG to fix the situation.

I wonder what would have happened if they called and said hey we don't have the box, is that still ok? My hunch is 95+% of people would say no big deal and take it anyways.  This just seems like something to complain about.

I know i have received items in the box that were far from new.

Easy enough? That doesn't sound easy at all, sounds like a hassle to me. Maybe I'm alone here but when I order something online from a place like DSG I assume it's going to be new and unopened. How do you know what's been done to the reel? There's a reason why there's no box. You also say it doesn't matter because it's still under warranty. Why on earth should anyone have to deal with the headache of sending in a supposedly brand new reel for warranty?

Just something to complain about? Geez. Yeah I guess everyone should just except the fact that anything they order online could be used or missing parts and not complain. I work too hard for my money to agree with that.

New is one thing, unopened is a completely different one.  I have seen people go into a store and ask to see some reels and open 5-6 boxes, try them all and then pick one.

Sure if i was paying full price for a reel I would be more concerned but if it was new but it was half price.  Seems like people just want a reason to complain to me...people are complaining about a situation that does not even apply to the situation.

And there were no missing parts, just a box.  You can register your reel online anyways and again, i would be shocked if more than 10% of owners actually do that too.

I called and cancelled mine.  I hadn't been billed and the order tracking never changed from "Item located in stock" so I called to make sure everything was OK...Rep told me that they didn't have any in stock and would be searching warehouses for the next 24-48 hours to find one for me.

I didn't need it that badly, plus I wasn't too thrilled with the report of it potentially being open/no box and DSG 'searching warehouses' for one... Plenty of deals to be found this time of year, not worth the headache for me. I have a feeling mine would have been cancelled anyway due to them not finding one in stock.

Anyone else receive their's yet?

Not yet. Mine is in town, but UPS says

I'll get it on Friday. Not sure why they

can't deliver today... grrr.

 Two Just Arrived ~

Both came in an opened / unsealed somewhat tattered box.

Both boxes included paperwork, bag of washers & the small storage bag.

Both show signs of being mounted on a some kind of rod; perhaps it was that short demo job that appears on a display wall for customers to test out & handle.

Either way, the paint at the corners of the reel seat is worn off.

On a positive note, the reels seems to perform in all aspects perfectly. I say again they both work perfectly.

So here's how I feel about the experience.  I paid half price for a demo model.  I'm happy.  I would have appreciated it if DSG indicated this on the retail site.  By the time I had emailed and asked if these were "New" or "Demo" reels and got a response, they would have been gone.  So that's the "risk" - if you want to call it that.

Also, if these reels were being sold say in the BR flea market - I'd have jumped on it - and I wouldn't have gotten the warranty.

Lesson learned - DSG is not always straight up with their sales practices.  I will definitely remember this experience when considering further "on sale" transactions with this vendor.

Sounds like DSG probably made all their stores over the country report in what they had left for Stradic 2500, and they decided to get rid of them by having a pre-black Friday sale. Once they were sold online, they had whatever store was closest to the customer ship whatever they had to them.

Sounds like bholtz got lucky. I'm still happy with my reel. Usually the only thing to worry about with display model spinning reels is the bail spring, because it's probably been flipped by every customer that touched it during its shelf life.

I got mine, brand new in box. However I would have been very disappointed if I received a no box, floor model etc. as some of you have stated. $100 for a discontinued reel is not a mind blowing deal in my opinion...especially a floor model

I spoke to a manager at my local DSG yesterday about this deal. He told me he thinks they went on clearance to get rid of whatever they had left in stock, I'm assuming to make room for the new model stradic. In any case, there is still an FH model left in my local store, but it is still priced at $139.99, which it has been for a while now. IMO, I believe DSG used a "ship from store" method to supply customers who purchased the reels online once they ran out at the distribution warehouse(s). This could explain why some received the reels that seem to be brand new, and others may have gotten demo models. Just my .02

My reel arrived today, from NJ.

Open box, box not even properly closed.

Reel in fine shape, though. Clearly someone

had "played" with it as the handle was not

connected to the left "normal" side, and the

cap on the right side was not tightened down.

No signs of being mounted on a rod, reel stem

looks pristine. Finger smudges on the rear silver

cap.

Overall, for $99, this seems to have been quite

a deal. Would have bought even if "open box"

in-store, and as A-Jay said, we'd have all jumped

on this in the Flea Market - used - at this price.

Found a display model at my local DSG for 139.00 about 5 weeks ago.No box ,bag or papers.Been to the store 3 or 4 times to try to talk them down.Went today and the store manager finally gave me 25% off + the 10 dollar coupon I had. After taxes 101.15.

Welcome to the forums!

Since you have the receipt from DSG, you could
give Shimano USA a call and ask what you can
do to get it covered.
