Smokinal Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 I added blades to my arsenal a few years ago and have seen how effective they are in cold water. Now I need to add spoons. What are you guys throwing for a jigging spoon these days? My thoughts are I need around a 3"-4" , 1/2 or 3/4 oz in chrome or hammered and some in white. Quote
desmobob Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 I kept forgetting to pull a couple of big Swedish Pimples out of my ice fishing box to try them on bass this fall. I'm done bass fishing for this season, but I'll try them next year. They're killer on everything I ice fish for, so I'm thinking they'll work great on cold water bass. That lure has been around for a long time and is outstanding for vertical jigging. I bet they'll work well fished like a blade. And with the single hook, they may not get hung up as much. Super User scaleface Posted November 19, 2015 Super User Posted November 19, 2015 I use the small CC spoons for lots of species of fish in the stained water of NE missouri. I usually use them from 10 to 15 foot sometimes a little deeper . The only other time I used them was at Table Rock lake one autumn . I bought a bunch of homemade 1/2 ouncers from a tackle shop there and caught quite a few spotted bass on points but also ended up snagging and losing every one of them . Most of the snags were from fishing line . 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 20, 2015 Super User Posted November 20, 2015 There should be some archived threads and articles on structure spoons. Take a look at Acme Little Cleo and Kastmaster spoons in 2/5, 1/2 and 3/4 oz Luhr Jensen Mr Champ and Crippled Herring in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 oz. Adding a white or white/chartreuse chicken feathered premium treble hook, Owner or Gamakatsu in sizes 4 (2/5-1/2oz) or 2 (3/4-1 Oz) increases strikes rario. Tackle; vertical spooning can be done with a variety of rods and actions. I use 12 lb mono, Big Game, with moderate action rod rated for the lure weight to reduce hook tear out near the boat. You can use a standard MH fast action and reduce the drag tension to 2-3 lbs. The most important factor with structure spoons is determine where the bait fish schools are located and how deep the active feeding bass are at. Your sonar unit is your friend, use it. Watch for bird feeding activity, birds have a keen eye for bait fish. You can drop a spoon straight down to the depth you see bait fish, set the hook if the spoon stops. You can can make a lob cast about 10-20 feet past the bait depth and let the spoon flutter down through the bait fish. Yo yoing a spoon a few times up and down about 1' to 2' through the bait fish, set the hook anytime it stops falling. If you snag a spoon shaking on slack line will usually free it. Tom 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 21, 2015 Global Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 7/8oz War Eagle jigging spoons in nickel or white is all I need. Always look forward to getting onto them with the spoons when the water starts to get real cold. 1 Quote

BobP Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I use the 3/4 oz minnow spoons from http://lurepartsonline.com/Online-Store/Jigging-Spoons/Jigging-Minnow.html They work as well as the more expensive spoons I've tried. 1 Quote
Josh Smith Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I prefer Dare Devel spoons in different weights up to 1oz or so. I also have an old (antique?) silver-colored spoon with engraved "scales". One thing I do to all of them is to replace the trebles with standard hooks. Josh 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 23, 2015 Super User Posted November 23, 2015 If you like Daredevil spoons the IMP 2/5 oz and IMP Heavy 4/5 oz in chrome are both good. Tom Quote

Super User WRB Posted November 24, 2015 Super User Posted November 24, 2015 Danh it forgot one! Nah you got, BPS Strata spoon is knock off of the Hopkins Shorty. Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 24, 2015 Super User Posted November 24, 2015 Nah you got, BPS Strata spoon is knock off of the Hopkins Shorty. Nah! The Strata spoons are longer Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 24, 2015 Super User Posted November 24, 2015 Can't tell the difference from Nah! The Strata spoons are longer Couldn't see that from a picture, don't use BPS lures. I over looked the Shorty also and used them a lot years ago, good spoon. If you are jigging the spoon off the bottom, reverse the line tie and hook with the hook on the wider end works good. Also stopped using the Bomber Slab spoon, another old timer that works. Try the Mr. champ, it's wider and flatter than the Kastmaster, over looked by bass anglers, works good. My favorite jigging was the Megabait 3/4 oz black and chartreuse shad, if you can find some buy them! Tom Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 24, 2015 Super User Posted November 24, 2015 Tom, Hopkins are stainless steel & come in more colors & hooks Strata are brass & come in chrome or white Slab spoon are still killer Mr Champ & Kastmaster are great for Red Fish P.S.: I replace all hooks with Excalibur Rotating Hooks, oval split rings, & add swivels. Super User J Francho Posted November 24, 2015 Super User Posted November 24, 2015 I put a better short shank hook on, and add a good swivel to the line tie. Sometimes I add a 6mm pink or chartreuse bead to line above the knot.It one of those little touches that I like, not sure if it's ever been a difference maker. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted November 24, 2015 Super User Posted November 24, 2015 Red Devil spoons red and white? Don't see these used much anymore. The fish phebe seems to work. Never had success with spoons. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 1, 2015 Super User Posted December 1, 2015 Aside from northern pike and saltwater fishing, I only throw about 3 metals for bass: > Johnson Silver Minnow (weedless spoon) > Hopkins Shorty (jigging spoon) > Silver Buddy (bladebait) Roger 1 Quote
