Kowen117 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Would it be better to just buy unpainted jig heads or pour them myself what type of head do you use and what mold do you use also what hooks size would you use for a 3/8-1/2 oz jig Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 17, 2010 Super User Posted February 17, 2010 Molds are running around $40 right now. I think I am down to 14 as I just sold some I no longer use. You are going to need a mold, way to melt lead, lead supply, hooks, weedguard, skirts and paint. $40 $50 $2/lb $.25 each, $.10 each $25 $6 for 2 oz Figuring for your first 100 jigs you would have about $165 plus what ever shipping would cost. After that the cost goes down as volume goes up. Quote
cadman Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Jig Man is correct. I you are going to do this as a one time shot it is not worth it. If you are going to pour several hundred a year then it seems more realistic. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I agree with the above posters. Also the mold style dictates the hook size and style. If they are for personal use and you dont go through too many I'd buy them and make the skirts. Quote
SmallieNH Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 When I first started fishing and was struggling for regular success, I asked a local hot stick for advice. He asked me how many jigs was I losing and I said very few. He said that I wasn't throwing them in the right places. With that being said, you are going to go through jigs if you are going to be successful. I throw a lot of ball heads in tubes and on grubs. I also throw a lot of spider jigs. These techniques make a bag with 100 jigs go away in relatively short order. Being able to use the hooks you want is a big plus and molds can be modified to accomodate a wide variety of hooks. Plus, it is real sweet to be loading the boat for a tournament and find out you need a few jigs to make sure you don't run out and you can go in the house and make them. With powder paint, you don't even have to let the jigs dry before you pack them. Dave Quote
