pennix5 Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 next year im goin to fish the flw bfl peidmont as a coangler my current combos are 7ft mh fast action w/ 7.5:1 reel 7ft m moderate action w/ 5.1:1 reel 7ft m fast action spinning setup do i need to purchase another setup or could i get by with these three as a coangler Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted November 19, 2015 Super User Posted November 19, 2015 That would probably be just fine. Personally I would prefer 5 outfits if room would allow and you have the money. Finesse may be something to carry for fishing up north and heavy pitching and flipping sticks would be more popular in the south. I personally like: 1 crankbait/lipless bait rod 1 jig rod 1 weightless plastic or texas rig rod 1 drop shot rod (spinning) 1 medium spinning rod to use as a utility rod (jerkbaits, shakeyhead, or tubes) There would be enough versatility to swap out for say a frog, a spinnerbait, a chatterbait, topwater, etc. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted November 19, 2015 Super User Posted November 19, 2015 I take 4 rods with me as coangler...and honestly I only ever use 2 sometimes 3. Quote
zeth Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 I would add a 7'6" H and use it for flipping pitching carolina rig etc but you would be fine with those three. I tend to bring more rods like 6 or 7 depending on the rules. but only because I hate to waste time retying. 3 Quote
UKCATSBASSER Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 I would go with.... Cranking Rod Spinning Rod 2x 7'0" MH 6'6" M action Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 19, 2015 Super User Posted November 19, 2015 I take 4 rigs with me. Three baitcasters and a spinning reel. Jigs, Spinnerbaits / crankbaits, and weighted t-rigged plastics are what I use on the baitcasters. The spinning reel is for weightless plastics. If I hit on a pattern I will usually end up using one rig and putting the rest away. Quote
DelcoSol Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 I agree with Kickerfish1, 5 is all I use. sometimes I will swap out the drop shot rod for a second cranking setup. Quote
rangerjockey Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 You could get by fine with that.. I personally take 4 or 5 in the boat with me, but which ones depends on what the boater is doing., You will have a better Idea after the pre tournament meeting what baits you will be using most... Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted November 19, 2015 Global Moderator Posted November 19, 2015 I take 6, but at the pairings meeting I alway ask if 6 is ok and have never been told no regardless of the size of thier boat. All casting... 7'3" H/Xf for punching 7'2" Mh/F spinnerbait/chatterbait 7' H/F frog/swimbait 7'2" MH/F jig 2- 7'2" plastic rods Sometimes depending on the bite 1 is all I use, but I take them all. Rarely do I bring a spinning rod. If I do I substitute one of the plastics combo. Mike Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted November 19, 2015 Super User Posted November 19, 2015 I would bump that cranking rod up to a MH if that's the only cranking rod you're taking, but I'm a guy who throws alot of cranks, so maybe I'm biased. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 You have the basics covered. When circumstances allow, I'd look at adding a finesse spinning setup ML/XF and Hvy 7'6" flipping setup. You don't need all five in the boat. The boater should give you an idea what to expect in where and how he'll be fishing. Quote
5fishlimit Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Like others have said you will get by. As a co-angler myself I will bring 6 to 8 rods depending on the lake, but usually 3 of my rods are some sort of plastic texas rigged to save time on having to retie to often during a tournament. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted November 19, 2015 Super User Posted November 19, 2015 I'm sure you can get by with what you have, however I'd look at adding a combo in the ML power range and also one in the heavy power range. Quote
pennix5 Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 I WILL BE ADDING A 7'6FT HEAVY FOR FLIPPING AND PITCHING AND FOR FROGS Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Even in my tube I bring 4 rods. It is a tough choice which 4, and when I get out I always wish I had one more. Quote
zell_pop1 Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 When I was a coangler I took 5 combos plus a spare reel in case of a major backlash. Basically take what UkCats basser said plus maybe at least 1 reel at 6.x to 1. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 If you snap a rod by accident, are you allowed to borrow a rod from the main angler? Just curious as I've never fished a tournament. Quote
