Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted November 21, 2015 Super User Posted November 21, 2015 Does Brandy and Cognac count? If not, then the last bourbon I drank was last weekend. It was some delicious Rebel Yell. Quote
pbrussell Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 So, last night my buddy and I got together to sample each others whiskey collection. Prior to bringing my bottles at his house, I picked up Evan Williams Single barrel.  All in all, tried some jefferson reserve, elmer t lee, and popped open the evan williams. The Elmer T lee was FANTASTIC. Will be looking for a bottle if I can find it "cheap" somewhere.  The evan williams is great for the price point. Hard to beat a 9 year single barrel bourbon for 25 bucks, that actually tastes good. The Jefferson reserve was surprisingly thin. Don't think I'll be searching that one out. 1 Quote

That is the absolutely best way to taste them... head-to-head.  It's surprising how different they truly are when you compare them directly.  Line 'em up and sip 'em!  Tight lines, Bob Quote
atomicfriday Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Oh my goodness, I FOUND MY HOME. Â Â I make it a point to try the different whiskey varieties I discover at the local liquor stores. I have found Jeffersons Reserve to also, be not so great. In fact I rarely (never) use the word "awful" to describe bourbon but I am tempted to in that case. My usual go to is good ol' JD but I have made it my own tradition to buy a handle of Willett's Reserve for Thanksgiving, if you have not tried I highly recommend it. Â Very recently bought a cheap bottle of Evan Williams. Honestly not bad. Â I also enjoy spiced whiskey, Jeremiah Weed makes a few different types. I am in no way shape or form a fan of flavored whiskeys... the Crown maple and apple tastes like syrup. If I wanted candy I'd buy that instead of booze. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted November 23, 2015 Super User Posted November 23, 2015  the Crown maple and apple tastes like syrup.  the apple is a disgusting knock-off robitussin of sorts.  the maple is even worse.  It's like eating pancakes with a cheap liquor for the syrup.... no thanks.  give me the OG crown or the crown reserve (not a fan of the black either). 5fishlimit Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I am happy I stumbled upon this thread. Â I am a huge bourbon fan. Â My bar (a re-purposed lazy susan) has the following: Â Basil Hayden's (my personal favorite), Maker's Mark, Bulleit Bourbon, and Booker's (not open yet). Â Aside from these bottle I have 2 whiskey glasses, and a bottle of Angostura bitters. 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted November 23, 2015 Super User Posted November 23, 2015 I'm a big fan if Irish Whiskey ... Jameson Gold Label for me on the rocks or neat. Quote

Agreed; if you want something that doesn't taste like whiskey maybe drink something else. Like Malibu.  I have tried the Bulleit and Booker's, I don't recall them being bad (but lets be real, its bourbon) but I didn't buy another bottle. I forgot to mention earlier I am also a fan of the Irish whiskey, its a different effect. Figure they've been doing it the longest they might have an idea haha. I prefer Bushmills Black. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted November 24, 2015 Super User Posted November 24, 2015 One of my favorites is one 00Mod recommended, Henry McKenna Single Barrel Bottled in Bond. Â It's only about $30 a bottle and really, really good. Â I also like plain old Makers Mark. Â It's a great cheaper bourbon that I don't get aggravated over people mixing with Coke. Â Â 1 Quote

I've seen this bottle around. I may have to give it a shot! Picked up a bottle of knob creek last night to add the the collection for 25 dollars. Probably the sweetest bourbon I've got on my counter. This isn't a bad thing. I like it, but it wouldnt be my first bottle to buy if I could only pick one. 1 Quote

quanjig Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 Basil Hayden and Woodford are my go to's. I've tried a bunch that I enjoy but probably would pursue! I've had Jeffersons Ocean, a bit too salty for me, Bookers I enjoy on occasion, Bullit rye was a pleasant surprise! Knob is good, have yet to have any Pappy, one day I'm going to break into Roberts house and partake in his healthy supply of Pappy!!!! I'm a locksmith so don't think I can't!!! 1 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 A recent and a new favorite is Oban 14 year Single Malt. Good stuff Oban is tasty. This Wednesday we'll be doing whisky and cigars and I think we're going Irish. It'll likely be either Michael Collins 10 or Jameson Cask Mates. I haven't tried the Cask Mates yet, so I'm looking forward if that's the case. As for the Michael Collins, Cooley Distillery makes a lot of great Irish whiskey. 2 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 So, Jameson Cask Mates is one of the smoothest whiskies I've ever tasted. It's not a punch of flavor like an Islay Scotch, but it's a very difficult whisky to not like. Quote
Smokinstang68 Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 My other addiction used to be collecting Maker's Mark bottles. Â At one time I had over 400 collector bottles that were unopened. Â I sold all of them except for about 20 in order to buy some land to deer hunt on, but this was my collection in its prime. 8 Quote

dcmclassic Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I'll try any whiskey at least once. But my favorite is Yellow Rose. Either their Bourbon or "Blended" whiskey. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted December 16, 2015 Super User Posted December 16, 2015 Elijah Craig 12yr and Woodford Reserve are two of my recent favorites. For more inexpensive bourbon you can't beat Evan Williams black label and Ezra Brooks. Quote
pbrussell Posted December 23, 2015 Author Posted December 23, 2015 The collection grows. Even got a hold of a white whale bottle... 5 Quote
