JigMe Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Cabela's posted their blackfriday ads and Quantum EXO PT casting reel will be on sale. Anyone used this reel before? what do you guys think of it? Never own a quantum reel before, but I am a bit interested since it will be mark down for 150 bucks. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted November 17, 2015 Super User Posted November 17, 2015 What do you want to know, I have well lets say A LOT. Â I have all three sizes, and all three gear raitos in the 100 size. Â Actually have 2 of the 6.4's, Â 2 of the 7.1's, and a 5.3. Â All are smooth, nice casting (although some people do have issues trying to dial them in), they are comfortable to fish, and so far have held up quite well. Â Have any questions just ask and I'll try and answer it the best I can. 2 Quote

WdyCrankbait Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 They are made in China. Â Gulf knows a lot about them. Â I have a 7:3 to 1 100PT and love it. Â I am currently parting ways with all my other brands and making the switch to Quantum. Â Â Very solid reel! casts into next week, maintence, a few drops of oil and go, braking system seems bullet proof to me. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 I found the ad, ok well my wife did because I stink at this internet thing. Â It looks like they are $99/piece instead of $150 Â https://www.blackfriday.fm/adscan/cabelas Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted November 17, 2015 Super User Posted November 17, 2015 Overall quality, performance, maintenance, break system. is it made in US?  As Woody put it, they are great reels.  Made in China, all aluminum where it matters.  Maintence would be a drop of oil on each bearing once a month or depending on how much you fish maybe less.  Braking, well I can't answer that one.  I don't use any of the breaking options on any of my reels, they are all turned off.  They cast great, have a nice drag system, compact and comfortable to fish, and light.  I have yet to have to send one to Quantum (or any of the PT reels they make) for any kind of defect or service.  They are a solid well put together reel. Needless to say, I started swapping the reels I wanted to upgrade with these when I found them at a steal of a price about 4 months ago when I could get them at well almost at that $99 price point as many people have a negative view on Quantum.  This is probably due to a lot of their "cheap" reels they put out in the $35-50 area that are made of plasic and well are $35 reels.  If you are looking to move to Quantum I wouldn't buy any of their reels under the Accurist PT which is at the $100 mark.  So, my advice, if you can get an EXO for that or just above I would buy a few or what you can afford.   If you want, check out the review Tackle Tour did on them as well if you look them up on TW and click the review icon. 1 Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I wonder if this means Quantum is killing this line of reels? Â I wish it was worth it for me to drive down to get some. Â But, I assume other dealers will start marking these reels down. Quote
faygo1979 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Probably do the same thing as they did last year with the smoke. They changed the colors and added a few new options to them and greatly discounted the old ones. I picked up a couple smoke spinning reels and a bait casting reel this time last year. Â Quote

Super User WIGuide Posted November 18, 2015 Super User Posted November 18, 2015 I'm just finishing up my second season with mine. The pro's of the reel are it's light weight, ergonomic, and good drag. It cast's pretty well and you can cast some fairly light baits with it. The con's I've found with mine are that the braking system can be finicky. Once you get it dialed in it's pretty good, but it takes a bit more time to get there than with other reels I've used in the past. The other con I have is cosmetically. I might fish hard, but I'm pretty nice to my gear. I use rod gloves and reel gloves and they go on every time I put the rods away. They get set down not thrown to the deck. I've got reels over 10 years old that have very minimal amounts of boat rash. For whatever reason my EXO paint started to bubble up and flake off on the top of the frame making it look it it's been beat to death. For $100 though I would definitely buy another one. Too bad the sale is in store only. Quote
BassCats Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I have two of them and will probably get more as my other reels are retired. I love them. Quote

TrapperJ Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 It never would show up at $99 for me? Quote
Mumbly Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 They were sold out before I could try to order sadly. Would you guys say that this would have been the best reel for $99 currently? Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 They were sold out before I could try to order sadly. Would you guys say that this would have been the best reel for $99 currently? Â I personally dont like saying "best reel." I know what you mean. Â But, it seems like every other day someone is asking for "What is the best rod for $250"?, or something along those lines. Â For me, the beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. It is all about personal taste. Â Yes, the EXO is an awesome reel! Â I previously used to have all Curado 200Es, and once I figured out the EXO casting, yes the EXO will cast further and reel smoother. Look on the bright side, if Quantum is blowing these gen 1 Exos out, other places will soon have them for cheap as well. Â Quote

Funny that you mention the Curado 200E as that is what I have now along with a 50E. My question wasn't meant to be another "What's the best rod for $250" I am looking at adding another baitcaster and so I was mostly asking if it was the best value for $100. perhaps I was just trying to make myself feel better. The fact that you replaced all 200E's with Exo's pretty much answered it. How long did it take to figure out the Exo casting? 1 Quote
Californiafisherman Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I Seen This Deal The Night It Was Announced! Wanted To Jump On It So Badly Lol. Just Confirmed Order From Cabela's $119 For Lews TP. Think I'll Be Happier With This Reel. Hear Lots Of Good Things About It & Nothing Bad Quote

The fact that you replaced all 200E's with Exo's pretty much answered it. How long did it take to figure out the Exo casting? Â The casting took me a couple of days. Â The EXOs have some ceramic bearings in them that really let the spool spin up quickly! Â So, there will be some over run (which I generally like) initally with the cast. Â That will be the main difference between the 200E and EXO, would be say the first ten feet in the cast. Â I have my EXO set at about 1/2 way on the controls inside the reel, and use the tension knob to fine tune. Â That tension knob seems to have a good impact on casting. Â Granted, my Curado 200E's have served me great! Â I still have my 200E5, and 50E, and I will still use them, but the lighter EXO will outcast the Curados by a good amount. Â My rod I use most with this EXO is a Powell Endurance 723 XF, which does not feel like what and XF should be, but still a great rod. Â Meaning, the tip is pretty stiff. Â I also use my EXO on a Okuma Helios Micro Guide 7' H. Â The tip is a little more forgiving on the Okuma which allows me more confidence in really standing back and slinging with the EXO. My advice, initially use a MH rod, with say a lip less crankbait, 1/2oz to get a feel for the casting controls. Â Have the ACS III set inside the reel about 1/2 and tension knob say turned up to about 3/4 and start back off the tension knob to find your "Happy Medium." Â I hope you do enjoy the EXO, dont give up on it if takes you some time to cast properly. Â It was surely frustrating for me initially. Â I hope you enjoy your new EXOs and best of luck fishing with them! Â Wdy 1 Quote
