Super User flechero Posted October 5, 2009 Super User Posted October 5, 2009 We've had cool rainy weather here so naturally I'm thinking about winter time and rod building. (it doesn't hurt that I was locked in this weekend finishing 2 builds, though.) I have a short list of builds for the cold weather... - MB843 (already started, just lack wrap and finish) -All Star 815 (will be built as a spinning rod) -9 wt. and 4 wt. fly rods -North Fork blanks (2 or 3) -working on some new comfortable spinning reel seats, work in progress. ...lol Lets hear it... what are you guys up to once the weather turns? Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 My GM at work is big into United Way. I'm building a spinning rod on a St, Croix blank to raffle off as part or our company fundraiser. Still in design phase right now. Quote
ejtaylor822 Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 Hey, flechero, nice list there. let us know how those north forks go. Anxious to try some of those out myself. Got a few builds underway and in the works. Some really nice ones too. Unfortunately, none are for me..... Eddie Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted October 5, 2009 Super User Posted October 5, 2009 I have more than a few rods to build. 2 - Forecast SH1025-2's (1 needs finish on the guides and the other one has the grip about half done on the lathe.) 2 - Rainshadow ISB841's (have the elliptical inlays turned) 3 - American Rodsmith 7' MH (Grips and reel seats all glued up, just need wrapped and finished) 2 - Shikari's - MB705 casting and IP-7000 spinning (Grips and reel seats all glued up, just need wrapped and finished) 1 - St. Croix 3S50ULF (haven't even started) 1 - Fenwick 5'6" glass (Grips and reel seats all glued up, just need wrapped and finished) The problem with all this is: not a single one of them are for me :'( I have a few CTS blanks and a St. Croix with my name on them, but who knows when they will get built. I've also been warned that I have at least 10 repairs being sent my way soon from a few Captains in NY. Quote
rubba bubba Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 I have a number of low end builds I'm making, and one high end build for my Dad. The rod for pops will be next up, though. It's going to be an Avid 3S70MF. Quote
Super User flechero Posted October 6, 2009 Author Super User Posted October 6, 2009 Well for you or for profit, post some pics anyway! Just remember that for each rod built that;'s not for you, you are several $ closer to a rod for you!! ;D Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 7, 2009 Super User Posted October 7, 2009 Wow!! Talked with Karen @ Bingham's yesterday the MSRP's on those blanks are something. I can see minimum 300.00 rod price points using the NFC blanks almost before you have guides/seats and cork factored in... The blank I was looking at is 212.00 msrp my second choice was 183.00. Might have to sit back and wait to see if the blanks are worth the price points.... Good luck & Tight Wraps!!! Quote
Super User flechero Posted October 7, 2009 Author Super User Posted October 7, 2009 Well, I guess NFC and Loomis do sound alike, right? Which models was she carrying? I assume the $200-ish were the high mod. blanks? Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted October 7, 2009 Super User Posted October 7, 2009 The wholesale price isn't much better on them either. The only blanks available so far are the IM series, so I fear the prices of the HM once they are available. Here's what Karen has so far: MB665- 10-17 1/4-3/4 6'6" Fast MH MB666- 12-20 1/4-1 6'6" FAST H MB668- 12-25 3/8-1 1/4 6'6" FAST MAG-MED MB705- 10-17 1/4-3/4 7' FAST MH MB709- 12-20 1/4-1 7' FAST MAG-H MB661 2-6 1/32-3/16 6'6" FAST UL MB662- 4-8 1/16-1/8 6'6" FAST L MB663- 4-10 1/8-3/8 6'6" FAST ML MB664- 8-14 1/4-5/8 6'6" FAST M Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 7, 2009 Super User Posted October 7, 2009 Yup was talking with her about these (IM) series: MB705- 10-17 1/4-3/4 7' FAST MH....MSRP $183.00 MB709- 12-20 1/4-1 7' FAST MAG-H...MSRP $212.00 She told me she should get the shipment by thursday.. Quote
Red Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 I only have two planned. One will be a 7' spinning rod, don't know what blank yet. This rod will be used for flukes and the like. The other will be a 6'6" casting that will become my spinnerbait rod. It is going to be built on an Allstar 784. Cliff Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 12, 2009 Super User Posted October 12, 2009 Taking the plunge ordering the... NFC MB705- 10-17 1/4-3/4 7' FAST MH today. Well see what the blank feels and looks like this week.. Did find out that these blanks are off of the Shikäri® SHX mandrels that were part of the sale when the Loomis bros bought the company... Tight Wraps All!!! Quote
ejtaylor822 Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Did find out that these blanks are off of the Shikäri® SHX mandrels that were part of the sale when the Loomis bros bought the company... Tight Wraps All!!! Did not know that. Thanks for passing that on. Really liked the couple of old Shikari blanks I had built on. Good to know. Thanks, Eddie Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 12, 2009 Super User Posted October 12, 2009 Yea but that only insures the tapers to be very good tapers... I believe he (GL) is using the SHX and SHII mandrels. I have built on both of those blanks/tapers (1- 7' SHX and 2- 6'6" SHII), they were awesome blanks, but that was from Shikäri® graphite rolls.. We will see how NFC uses the mandrels.... Tight Wraps!!! Quote
Super User flechero Posted October 13, 2009 Author Super User Posted October 13, 2009 We will see how NFC uses the mandrels.... I bet GL still knows how to roll em' and I bet he's using good materials... I think it would be the bigger surprise if these blanks aren't considered very good or better. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 13, 2009 Super User Posted October 13, 2009 Just checked my tracking #'s and it is on the truck for delivery today. Going to do a lot of waggling today... Have the Laguna Burl all set aside for the grips, still have to make up my mind on the guides.. Tight Wraps!! Quote
Super User flechero Posted October 14, 2009 Author Super User Posted October 14, 2009 OK, you've waggled all day... time to start reviewing and sharing with friends! ;D Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 14, 2009 Super User Posted October 14, 2009 Ok received the blank late (typical FEDX) yesterday. We took posession of a new gen IM MB705- 10-17 1/4-3/4 7' FAST MH, the blank color is matte charcoal gray. The unfinished blank weight is a whopping 2oz. Took a quick look at the blank and found it to be straight as an arrow (the first runs were hand picked/inspected before packing them for shipment to distributors and given gold decals). Shook the blank and bent it and it does feel like a medium heavy, the taper looks just like my mag heavy Shikäri® SHX rod. I don't do CCS testing... For a second gen IM rated blank the blanks are as thin walled as the Saint Croix® LT-B and Shikäri® SHX blanks I have built on. That's all for now.. Tight Wraps!!! Quote

I Love BassResource Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Nice work on those handles. It takes allot of time, patience, and attention to detail to get those right. Good job! Quote
RobE Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 Here's a pic of my current build, a Forecast MB843 that will be my primary jig rod. Royal Blue and Steel Blue Met are the colors. And a reamer is in the works, too. Quote
