MikeOGNR Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Hey guys took on hunting a few years ago started with a bow, but I was wondering for a beginner what do you think the best option would be I have limited time as we'll as I fish mostly up through mid bow season. Quote
bholtzinger14 Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I have done both. I prefer to use my bow if I have a place close to home that I can go often. I take my rifle on out of state hunts. So, I'm no help to your question. Quote

So, I'm no help to your question. I think my biggest issue with the bow is I couldn't be as mobile as I really wanted to be to go after the deer. I don't know then I started instead of using a tree stand sitting in a chair in lay downs and such using it as cover. Give me a little more mobility Quote
MidwestF1sh Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I use a slug gun and just sit against a tree by an active deer trail. Not the fanciest set up but it works for me! 1 Quote
VolFan Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 You should be fine with a bow and a ground blind or climbing stand...I hunted with a lever action and ground blinds for years in TN. None of my shots were outside bow range. Stalking through timber edges is a great way to go too. Quote

I figured it wouldn't be bad as long as I stay still and have good concealment plus I figured I can get into those thick places and work those big Deers. Quote
endless Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 If can and want both worlds go to a Xbow. I used one. I just got me bow but I will not use it till next season. I want to be fully confident. No your laws too some counties might allow you to use rifles which I heard the Ruger American is good rifle but not sure of your state or county. I aldo just use my Muzzleloader into and after muzzleloader season. 1 Quote
sprint61 Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Check local laws you may have to take a safety course before hunting, I know you have to acquire your orange card in KY. My vote is for bow season last a lot longer and imo a deer with a bow is more rewarding. I notice you mention mobility my advice is sit still. Sure deer will be killed still hunting but much more will be killed setting up in a prime spot just waiting. My number one tip is don't think hunting is going to be like what you see on tv because it's not. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted November 25, 2015 Super User Posted November 25, 2015 First wear ORANGE please. You can buy a used Winchester 120 model slug gun cheap. I paid $250 a few years ago. Check your pawn shops. I hunted with slugs in my double barrel 12ga. I used the brenneke whistling slugs. Very accurate in smooth bores. I tried the sabot slugs made for rifled barrels in my smooth bore and they were accurate too. Quote
