Braid On Bait Caster Leaders?

Do i need to use a leader for braided line? Im new to using braid

All depends on the cover you are fishing. Braid has no abrasion resistance on rock, so if you fish a lot of rock like I do, you better have a leader on; usually fluorocarbon.

Yes and no.  Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.  Clear water finesse fishing....yes.  Cranks....yes and no.  Frogs, flipping, pitching heavy cover and grass.....no.  Just have to see what the conditions and technique and adjust on the fly sometimes.  I will tell you its a whole lot cheaper fishing flourocarbon in 6ft pieces then 100yrd respools.

I have been fishing rocks lately and so have been using fluorocarbon leaders when picking those rocks apart. The one on the ultralight is pretty long, in fact, so that the braid doesn't really come into play since it's so thin.

If I don't have a crankbait rod spooled with mono along with me, I use a cheap mono leader as cheap mono really stretches and I want that shock protection. Still a pretty long leader for this, 4' to 6'.

Funny; I never use leaders on my slop and jig rod, even in rocks. It's spooled with 65lb Power Pro and I never had troubles, even in rocks.

Braid has spoiled me, though. I lost two jerkbaits last fishing trip. I was using 30lb Power Pro with 4' to 6' 8lb fluoro leader, and when I got snagged I flat forgot how easily non-braid breaks!

I use braid on all my reels and always tie on a leader.

 

Not because of visibility or such, but a leader lasts

for quite a few lure ties, whereas my braided main

would be going down more quickly if I kept cutting

and retying on it.

 

So aside from all the opinions whether it is necessary

or not to use a leader, you can go the economic 

route like some of us do.

 

All a matter of opinion and confidence. No right or 

wrong way to do it.

The only problems using straight braid on a bait caster is very small line diameter under .009D can cut down into the spooled line and braid over 30 lb test can break both the rod and damage the reel trying to break a snag off. Using braid with leaders you always have 2 knots to fail.

If I'm fishing braid on a baitcaster I'm fishing straight braid. Braid on a spinning reel almost always has a leader though.
