backcast88 Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I'm wanting to get into throwing spybait's. I've been looking at the Duo Gfix 80 and Jackall iProp. The Duo gets a lot more press than the Jackall. Has anybody been using both or is there one that works better? Quote
DTack Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Get the Duo bait... I like the regular one better than the gfix myself. I'm not an expert on them but I have caught fish with them. They definitely work. Keep it low and slow! Quote

Preytorien Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I have and use both of those lures. Here's my two cents. The Duo seems to have the design pretty much perfect. The weight balance is ideal and allows for incredibly long casting, even with the standard Spinbait 80 (not the G-Fix or 90) I use braid with a 6lb or 8lb leader. Neither seems to offer much difference over the other. I use the standard Spinbait 80 on spinning tackle, but I'll occasionally use all three on casting gear, again with a leader, although since it's casting, the leader ends up being closer to 10lb. I'd get the 80 G-fix since it can be thrown on either and will cover most of the bases you'd want with a spinbait. Check, check, and check your knots. I've lost two with a weak knot. Your heart sinks in your stomach when you see that lure plop in the water with no line attached. More often than not I usually fish it too fast. I like to run it just above bottom oriented weed beds, so I run it too fast to keep weeds off the hooks. Slow down and hang on, hits are violent. Good luck! 1 Quote
DTack Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Do you grow it on spinning gear? Is 8lb fluoro too much or should I go with 6lb? I personally use spinning gear exclusively. I think I reel it at the correct speed with a spinning reel. Preytorien made a great post above. I actually use 7lb sniper fluoro so I am between 6 and 8 however, I think their diameter is closer to most 6lb lines. I am not a braid to fluoro leader guy so I can't comment much there, although Preytorien made a great post explaining his use. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted November 11, 2015 Super User Posted November 11, 2015 I have the 90 and i can throw it on 12lb flouro. Thing is, the 90 is half an ounce which means you gotta reel it fairly quickly to keep it off bottom. The 80 will maintain depth better Quote
Will Wetline Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I've had consistent action with the original Spin Bait 80 for the past two seasons in very clear water for smallmouth. Here's the setup: 7' ML Rod 2500 size spinning reel 6 lb. fluorocarbon You must have patience to fish this bait properly; reel slowly with the rod tip low to the water. Do not add any extra action. There is already quite a bit of info on BR about this bait. Search "Duo Realis Spin Bait 80" and "spybaiting." And there's more to be found on a Google Search. So . . . if you can stand a boringly slow retrieve and fish clear water, spend $14.00 and you may be amazed at your results with this unconventional lure/presentation. 1 Quote
Dye99 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Ive been using a few different colored duo's on 6lb test with a spinning rod. I keep hearing how amazing they work, but Ive yet to see them do anything for my game outside of boring the living hell out of me with that slow retrieve... Quote
backcast88 Posted November 16, 2015 Author Posted November 16, 2015 Any colors tha you recommend? I was thinking of Ghost M Shad or Ghost Pearl but I'm open to other suggestions. Quote
Logan S Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I've used both, the Jackall sinks nose-down with essentially no action and the Duo sinks perfectly level with a shimmy. I've caught fish on both, but I prefer the Duo since it's falling action is better. I've used the regular Spinbait 80, the GFix 80, and the Jackall 75 iProp. I throw all of them on casting gear, 7'M/M rod and 10 lb flouro with a loop knot. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not an expert in the technique, I just started using it this season...But I've learned enough to know when to throw it and when not to throw it on my local waters and caught enough fish to keep it a part of my arsenal. Cast. Count-down. Slow and steady retrieve. That's how I've had the most success, but I have caught a few on a lift and fall retrieve too. Quote
Karsonclowers Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 What is the countdown on those spybaits? 1 foot per second? Quote
cjam93 Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 What is the countdown on those spybaits? 1 foot per second? Just posting to remind myself to check this, I would like to know as well. Quote
