PatrickKnight Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I have been using braid only for a while now (90% of the time I am fishing spinning gear due the baits I throw) but I am thinking of giving fluro a shot. However for someone who never uses it picking one out can be fairly confusing. I don't really want to spend the money on Tatsu (from what I have read here on the forums this is the best on the market) without knowing if I will like how it fishes. What is a good fluro that wont break the bank but will give me a good idea if I will like the line? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 10, 2015 Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2015 If you're mainly using spinning gear I'd stick with the braid and just tie a fluoro leader. I use to use flouro for a lot of things but now I'd down to just using it for bottom contact baits on casting gear. Everything else is straight braid, braid with a leader, mono, or copoly. I just didn't feel it was giving me any noticeable advantage over the much more cost efficient and less finicky line options. 5 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted November 10, 2015 Super User Posted November 10, 2015 I agree with Blue, use it as a leader. This is what I do with all of my setups. Braid makes for a great mainline and you use either fluoro, copoly, or mono as your leader. This way the "expensive" spools you buy will last you a long time. Personally, I will use fluoro, but mostly use copoly - Pline Floroclear and Yo-Zuri Hybrid. Currently I have 4 600 yard spools of YZH which will last me a very long time as leader material. Quote
PatrickKnight Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 Well it looks like you guys just saved me some money . Currently I am using Sunline Super Natural for leaders only because I got a really good deal on a couple spools of 10 lb test. I may pick up some Yo-Zuri Hybrid to give that a run because I would prefer a little more abrasion resistance in the leader than I get with the Sunline. 1 Quote
John G Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 To answer your question, Sunline Sniper FC in 6 or 7 # is cheap enough to try and it's a great line too. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 10, 2015 Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2015 I'll add that if you do try fluorocarbon, put enough cheap mono backing on that you only need about 50 yards of fluoro to finish filling the spool. There's no reason to spool the entire reel with fluoro, you're not going to be making 50 yard cast, even the biggest bass aren't going to run out more than about 10 yards of line before you can get them stopped. 1 Quote
cottny27 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Don't make the mistake that I did and try to start with the cheap fluoro. It will leave a bad taste in your mouth....cough"Vanish" 1 Quote
bigfruits Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I like fc sniper 8lb for jigs/t-rigs and weightless plastics on 2500 spinning reels Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted November 10, 2015 Super User Posted November 10, 2015 i wouldn't cheap out either.... invizx has been good to me on the spinning reel and the sniper i put on my casting reel is great. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted November 10, 2015 Super User Posted November 10, 2015 Fluoro has been known to cause problems on spinning reels. If you're going to try it, I would recommend staying below 10 lb test. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 10, 2015 Super User Posted November 10, 2015 Take a look at Sunline Assasin FC 8 lb (.0094 dia.) @ $20 for 225 yards. You will need a good line conditioner with FC and learn how to tie knots like San Diego jam knot. I use Tangle Free line conditioner (Cabelas). You may want to try the FC as a 6' leader to start with joined to the braid you already have using a double uni knot. Tom Quote
blckshirt98 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Fluoro is stiffer than mono and will bounce off your spool and ruin your fishing, never spool with just fluoro above 8# on a spinning reel. Like many have said, use braid, with a fluoro leader, so you can get the best of both worlds. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted November 10, 2015 Super User Posted November 10, 2015 6 or 8# Invisx would be a good place to start. It is what I use with good success. I am not a fan of braid and use fluorocarbon on both spinning and casting gear. I agree with WRB that care must be taken with knots and a good line conditioner (I use KVD Line and Lure) is helpful. Cough, cough, Vanish, cough.... I tried Seaguar InvisX and liked the way it handled, but it gets sliced up and shredded by toothy fish and Zebra Mussels. Their AbrazX works much better for me. But I am now also in the boat with guys who use braid and just a fluoro leader. When I need mono, I like cheap, good, Yo-Zuri Hybrid. Tight lines, Bob Quote
Hogsticker Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 The nice thing about fluoro is the different characteristics you can get from it. You just have to get the appropriate line for what you're trying to achieve whether it be sensitivity, handling, etc. Braid will always be braid, and on a super windy day I'll take a pass. I agree with a few comments like don't start with a cheap fluoro and trying Sunline Assassin. Fluoro can be a nightmare and there's a lot of people who don't like it. I got burnt out on braid and made the switch to all Sunline Defier, Sniper, and Assassin. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 11, 2015 Super User Posted November 11, 2015 I can't stand braid on spinning setups, wind knots and no sensitivity on slack line drives me nuts. Tried a couple different flouro's and found one that worked great for me at a decent price, Invizx 8lb. Quote

I cant comment on the wind knots because I rarely get them and when I do its my fault. Quote
cottny27 Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Well Seaguar Red Label handles the best IMO for that price range. I've been using it on one of my setups all year. However, it does fray easier and wouldn't recommend it for bottom contact lures unless you have a clean bottom. Quote
