Right now im looking to set up my finesse rig and I really like the Phenix Maxims due to their affordability and reputation, not to mention they look sweet. I was wondering if the 6' 10" Medium Light with the mod fast tip would be good enough for drop shot with the slower tip and if it was too light for shakey heads. The lure weight says 1/8 to 1/2 oz. so it seems like it would be fine or should bump up to the next level which is a 7' 2" medium action with a fast tip with a lure weight of 1/8 to 3/4 oz, or would that be too heavy for drop shot. Trying not to buy two rods and I really like these. Thanks.

Hey, welcome to the forums! Feel free to introduce yourself in the introduction section.

As for the rod I don't have experience with either of those but I will say I have a 7'2" medium extra fast drop shotting rod and love it. I want a Powell medium light rod for another drop shot rod and shakey head but if I had one I am very happy with my 7'2" medium rod.

I'm sure somebody with experience with those rods will chime in and help you out.

Really surprised nobody else has commented...

Imperative? No, but it is nice

The idea behind it is you want a super soft tip to shake the worm and not move the weight but have enough power and sensitivity to drive the hook home.

I don't think you would have a problem with your ML rod. Once you get used to it who knows, you might like it better. Its a lot of preference and feel.

Phenix makes excellent rods , including finesse spinning rods for drop shotting , if you can make a little more room in your budget , you should take a look at the M1 7'2''Light / Fast action rod , lure rating 1/8 - 3/8 oz.

i have a M1 7'8'' M/ExFast rod custom wrapped with micro guides that i drop shot and throw weightless 5'' stick baits with , wacky style , the rod is great .....

I've handled both rods and have a few custom Phenix builds. The medium light you refer to will have a sweet spot around 3/8 Oz. If you're fishing anything much heavier on a shaky head, plastic included, I would opt for the medium. Phenix blanks tend to run lighter than advertised. The medium fast will also be slower in action than the average fast action rod. It's a Phenix thing. On a side note these Maxim blanks felt great for the price. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Plus sic guides - bonus!
