Getting ready to pull the plug and get a 7' M/F casting rod. Was debating on getting a MH but its seems most everyone agrees that they are all pretty conservatively rated.

Planning on using it as an all purpose rod. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, lipless cranks, jigs 1/2 oz or less, and perhaps some soft plastics.

Just making sure im not missing anything, any any advice is appreciated.

Also if its any use Ill be pairing it with a lews speed spool lfs

I have the St. Croix Avid X Spinning Rod (7 Ft, Medium Fast). It's great for pretty much anything you can think of (jigs, topwater, flukes, frogs, etc.). In my opinion, if you're using things 1/2 ounces or less, the Medium is perfect, but if you want to be a little safe then the Medium Heavy would work too.

I agree, the medium works perfectly for cranks and spinner baits for me as well.

Great rods.

I would agree a medium should suit you well, even though I prefer to throw lipless baits on my MH/F St. Croixs as the extra power helps to rip them out of the grass. If you're fishing them more in open water, a Medium will treat you just fine.

I prefer the reel seat on my standard Avid's over the Avid X. My current X has a stripped thread and has to be sent back to the factory.

Good to know I just bought this rod for all these same applications.  Unfortunately, when it showed up it was the 7' m/m so I had to send it back.  Hopefully I get the right rod by this weekend.

My recent purchase in September was for a 6' 6" ML Avid X fast spin. I love it. I don't have an issue with any of my St croix rods. 15 yr warranty to boot.

I'd never tell anyone what to get. Get what you want. Get what you like. SC has a crap pot bunch of rods. The feel that you are looking for is not that of others.

I don't like a real fast or xf action for crankbaits. Soft plastics different story. In my mind it all about the shock absorber thing. I know many guys think differently. SC certainly makes fast rods for CB's. Especially in the high end rods.

I fish almost exclusively St Croix rods. My favorite crank bait rod if found for river smallies is my Premier Series 6'6" med. moderate action. 1/4 - 5/8 lure wt. the stuff I throw falls right in the middle. I like it. Wish I had a dollar for every smallie I caught with it.

My suggestion is get to a shop or show where all or most of the StCroix stuff is there. See what feel best to you. On the water will be the tell tale. You'll find your rod. If you are not in a big rush look all winter until you find it.

Don't underestimate the Primere Series of casting rods. Price doesn't break the bank either.

I don't own a Avid but I do own a few LTB,S .  My 7mm has become my main spinnerbait ,chaterbait rod. It seems like I can keep them pinned much better then with a stiffer rod.  The MH in this line seems to be closer to most heavy action then medium.  I use that rod for frogs , jigs etc.  Are bass are much smaller up here in the MI , OH area but I had no problem pulling in about a five pounder on a chatterbait this summer out of the weeds.  On a side note if you have large hands  I have found front grip on their split grip way to short for my LX glove size hands. I took three last night to the rod builder to have the grip area extended .  All casting rods. On spinning rods I don't think it would matter.

Question!

I've decided I want to upgrade a medium spinning combo with an Avid X. I bring only a few rods (5 max) at a time with me on a kayak so I usually need them to serve a few different purposes. Here is what I'll use it for:

60%:  wacky rigs, weightless and light t-rigs (flukes, ribbontails)

15%  tubes, grubs, paddle-tails

15%  Small topwaters

10%  Jerkbaits

I'm looking to choose a length and action that will give me the best balance of functionality among these uses (I can split duties with the current rod, but it's not very sensitive). Leaning toward the 6'8" MXF -- does that sound about right? Will I wish I had gone with a longer rod (the 7'0") or a fast action instead of XF, for some reason?  Or, since St. Croix has a reputation for being more powerful than their ratings, should I consider an ML power instead of M?

68mxf will be perfect for what you want.  I have the LTB version in both spinning and casting.  I have a fluke on the casting rod most of the time, i also use it for jerkbaits, and  topwater .  I use the spinning rod for senkos, wacky rigs, ned rigs, shakeyheads, grubs, etc.

I have both a 7' MF and 7'MHF in the Avid X.  The 7' MF is a great, versatile rod. I also have a casting 6'8" MXF in the new legend elite.  There's definitely more backbone in the 7' MF "profile" rod and I have been very pleased with it in a variety of presentations.  While the 6'8" MXF has plenty of muscle, I like it better for finesse presentations.  The 6'8" MXF in a spinning rod is my favorite rod.
