NewAngler Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Well.. I've never tied anything but my shoes and some knots. Got my wife a fly tying kit for christmas, and she didn't touch it. I thought I would try out some hair jigs for some smallies. Please, critque the hell outta these.. I cant seem to wrap them tight enough for the hairs to stay in, a moderate tug pulls strands out. LHC - Bank Robber Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 did you use any glue/ head cement? that might help hold the hairs in better. Dont look to bad to me, how much do they weigh? Quote
NewAngler Posted January 15, 2010 Author Posted January 15, 2010 I used some head cement on two, and it didnt help. 1/8 oz. all I had at the time. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 15, 2010 Super User Posted January 15, 2010 You need a few things to keep the hair in place: 1. a vice to hold the jig, 2. some real strong thread, 3. a bobbin to hold the thread and give you leverage as you wind the line and 4 a whip to let you put several half hitches in the line. NewAngler Posted January 15, 2010 Author Posted January 15, 2010 Thanks, Jig. I have all those items but the whip.. Quote
Vodkaman Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Did you lay some thread down, before adding the hair? This would help grip the hair from above and below. Thet look great to me. Dave Quote
silverbullet32 Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 a tight vise and kevlar thread. it's what i use for deer hair poppers. do as many wraps as you can with out differing the chape of the jig Quote
River Rat316 Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Apply head cement, wrap the shank of the hook, or collar of the jig with a good layer of thread, this helps hold the hair in. You also need to wrap as tight as you can without breaking the thread, which if you are using Kevlar is pretty dang tight Quote
RandySBreth Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Good underwraps, tight wraps on the material, and good cement or glue should do it for you. I sometimes use superglue for jigs, just make sure it dries clear. Quote

Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 7, 2010 Super User Posted February 7, 2010 when you're tying bucktails, do all of the above, with the underwraps to hold the hair, and don't try to tie too much hair on at one time. also, after you put some hair on put a coat of superglue over the threads, let it dry, and keep adding hair till it is as full as you want, putting on occasional light coats of superglue just to hold things together. then do some whips (necessary) to finish it off, and coat the threads in a nice coat of superglue. <--- this won't come apart. VolFan Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 X2 on what DS said. Good tight underwraps, and add the hair a pinch at a time. Pull it as tight as you can. If you don't break the thread every few jigs, you're not pulling tight enough. Quote
