Detailed how to on making wooden swimbaits...

Any one have a link to one? I know how to make the basic shape. I am interested in how to connect the jointed pieces?.

Wooden swimbaits are out of my league. Hope someone chimes in or you might find some information at www.tackleunderground.com

Well I'm nowhere near as good as some of the garage crafters of this forum, and I'm not a specialist with wooden swimbaits either... but I can show you how I usually link the different parts of my swimbaits.

You should be able to understand it on this picture below !

(I will try to show a step-by-step approach after ).

Here are a few other shots I did a couple of years back !

This bait was made out of Balsa wood and not destined to hit the water... rather a training to enhance my carving skills.

Here the back of the front halve of the balsa bait.

Here are the 2 eye-screws glued in place at the back of the front halve of the lure

Here you can see the 4 eye-screws glued in place. I normally use only 2 that are the one in the front halve of the lure.

That's the rear halve of the bait

The nail goes through those tiny holes in the wood, as well as though the eye-screws !

View from the top, you can see the top of the nail I used for the axis !

Here you can see the two parts jointed together !

And here's the bait when finished ... without its lip though !

Hopefully those many pics won't slow down the site !

I hope it helps you with your own wooden swimbaits ! Homemade lures are a lot of work, but a lot of fun too.

i plan on making a 6 or 7 inch shad swimbait using your joint method MaxDal. yesterday i saw a big ole gizzard shad floating on the surface so now i know what some of the forage base is in that lake.

Be sure to keep us posted on your next creation. Do you plan to do a gizzard shad photo-finish on that bait ? Or will you paint it ?

What kind of glue?

I use a super-glue that I mix with very fine sawdust, which gives a wood aspect somehow .... I feel it also makes the glue part harder....

I use the same sawdust+glue when I have to correct a mistake a wooden lure .... Sometimes you just carve too much  :

I have been making some crank baits a week now, and was curious how to make a jointed bait.  This is a very informative thread, and I appreciate the pictures, more than anything!    It really put a new perspective on things, for me!  I just need to get me some of those i-bolts...

The nail you see on the picture is a crappy one. I had to find one pretty quick for the picture.

I usually use stronger strainless steel nails, with a large head.

Hope I'm not too late. 

I want to ask how did you secure the nail/screw once placed into the eyes?  Do you use a long enough nail and just secure it in the wood of the lure?

yeah, just stick it in there far enough and recess the head of the nail into the body of the swimbait and put some epoxy over it to fill in the recess, then sand smooth with the body.
