1. Can you use a half of a senko or does it need to be z-man product?

2. What is the ideal weight for the jighead?

3. Is the bite hard to detect or do they slam it?

4. What is the best time to throw this ned rig presentation?

Sorry, been wanting to give it a try, but needed more info. Thanks.

Glenn beat me to it.  Most of what you need to know.  If you're still curious, check out this:

And for even more info use google to search 'ned' on bassresource...unfortunately, the BR search tool doesn't work well with three letter words

1. The Zman baits work best as they do stand up after the salt dissolves out of them. A senko will lay flat; could still get bit but I think the Zman work better.

2. I have the 3 different weights but find myself using the 1/10 all the time.

3. Both. If the bite is really on I feel the "tick" every time but then there are the subtle bites as well when they will just be on it when you go to hop it. A lot like any other bottom bumping bait.

4. Any time! It shines when the bite is tough though and can turn a rough day into a good day.

How effective is the Ned Rig in murky or muddy water?

My home lake gets pretty green in the summer so I went to a 1/2 Zinkerz in Green Pumpkin Orange and they loved it. I would imagine the Coppertreuse TRD would work as well.

Here is a fine Ned rig specimen for ya. This was right after my tricep re-attachment.

I haven't kept stats, but I'd guess that between 1/3 and half the time (at least in calm-ish water), my first sense of a bite is seeing the line move.

1 - You can use half a Senko, but you better be independently wealthy. One ZinkerZ bait cut in half  (2 baits) will last longer than a whole package of Senkos. Ned just reported over 200 bass on one single Finesse WormZ this week.

2 - 1/16-oz is the "standard" of original MF anglers, but you'll find a variety of answers as more people use the bait in more diverse situations. Personally, I use 1/16-oz 80% of the time.

3 - Traditional tactic is to achieve a "no feel" retrieve. As such, while some will "slam it," most times bites will be pressure bites or line movement. "Ticks" are also a distinct possibility depending upon setup.

4 - Anytime/all the time for devotees.

Sorry for being off topic but how on earth do you detach a tricep? Get well

Here's my two cents

1. Can you use a half of a senko or does it need to be z-man product?

Z-man is my preferred product, but be careful on storage.  keep them in the packs you got them in and keep them out of the heat/sun.  Anything that's buoyant will probably work since the mushroom head is meant to stand up.

2. What is the ideal weight for the jighead?

1/10 has always been my ideal weight but I wouldn't go any heavier than a 1/6.

3. Is the bite hard to detect or do they slam it?

The bite can is hard to detect and just like any jigging, you need to practice it to be comfortable knowing when something hits it.  Lately I've been using the weedless Shroomz jig heads because I was tired of thinking rocks were bites and then setting it for no reason.

4. What is the best time to throw this ned rig presentation?

Anytime.  The trick is to find where they're at during each season.  right now in fall, I love throwing it against steep rocky bluffs and under boat docks.  I've found they don't work great in soft muddy bottoms, but rocky or sandy areas are great places to produce.  Also, the more you use a TRD finesse worm, the better they stand up.  I dont' know why, but they do.

1.  I think it's important to use a floating or somewhat buoyant worm.  I use half a Z-Man ZinkerZ or a Z-Man TRD.  Give them a good stretching before rigging them to loosen them up and free up some of the heavy salt, and they'll float right away.  A fresh-out-of-the-package ZinkerZ or TRD will sink.

2.  I like the lighter ones... 1/20 or 1/15 Shroomz for shallow water.  Maybe a 1/10 for deep water use.

3.  It's a slack-line presentation, generally, so you have to do some careful line watching.

4.  Use it any time, especially when nothing else seems to be working!

Tight lines,

Bob

Well you wouldn't know it now at 46 but bodybuilding is my other passion; been training since I was 14. Over the years, and really most recently, I've put a ton of stress on my joints and tendons. I tore a hole in my tricep tendon close to the attachment site on the elbow and the tendon was starting to lift off the bone. Luckily it never came unattached by itself as sometimes they do not reattach it; they just let it go. So the surgery was a full unattachment, cut back the torn end of tendon, grind the end of the Ulna, drilled holes in end of Ulna, slid tendon through holes and sew together. My surgeon said that attachment site for the tricep is actually pretty weak and he sees this in many bodybuilders. So now I'm going through the whole rehab scene and it's going ok. getting a little better every week.

This is when the cast came off 2 weeks after surgery and 17 staples later:

Hopefully I'll be 85-90% by January and 100% by March so I can start pounding it again.

Sorry to hijack; carry on.

Just found a shop that isn't DSG, that stocks these things. They didn't have green pumpkin so I went with bk/bl and PBJ. How do Zman plastics do in cold water?

I clobbered some good largemouths and a big smallmouth on Ned Rigs with half a Zinkerz in 47* water yesterday...

Definitely has to be a Zman product. Half a senko will work, but not as effective. Besides the TRD, you can also use their hulastickZ, batwingZ,and swimshadZ on that same jighead. All of them work!

Zman products are by far superior when it comes to the Ned. I like the 1/2 a Zinker, TRD, Hula Stick, shortened FattyZ, or Finesse WormZ.

I use 1/16 95% of the time regardless of depth or wind. It's a no feel technique anyways.

Both

Only time I've found it doesn't work well is really dirty water. Other than that you can almost always catch some fish on them.

I went to making my own. It's crazy how much they ask for those things at the store.
