Tommy X Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I recently got into baitcasting at 54 y/o and fell in love with it. I bought a Lew's Carbon Blue combo ($89.99) after 2 weeks of practice I was throwing that thing further then my spinning combos. I am now ready to step up to a next level combo. My mind is made up on a Lew's BB1 pro reel. So now I'm looking at rods. I'm looking to spend $150-200. I went over to the high end rod section at Dicks and was just kinda kickin the tires on the St Croix's the Doybin's etc. Then I picked up a Wright McGill Skeet Reese and really really loved it! I looked at the price on the Senko model and I was shocked it was only $87. It felt as good if not better then rods at twice the price. The only draw back is they are yellow! LOL. Matt black with yellow highlights would be a lot better IMO. but whatever. Is anyone using these these rods out there? How are they holding up? How well do they cast? Input please. I mostly use stickbaits and topwater and they make models for both. So I see 2 set ups in my near future. BTW, that same Senko rod is now on Amazon for only $58! Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted November 2, 2015 Super User Posted November 2, 2015 I dont own one but my Buddy does and loves his.It has stood up for a couple of years after alot of use.Im thinking about trying one out.Yea your right about the color lol.He says there durable and sensitive. Quote
Bassboy98 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I have over 15 Skeet Reese Rods. I love them a lot. They are sensitive and hold up pretty well. As for the color it doesn't really matter because the fish could care less if it is a yellow rod or a black rod. Well worth the money. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I have two currently. Love them both. I use the Toad/Senko and the Jig/Worm. I use them for all sorts of lures, not just what they're named for. Between my W&Ms and Abu Garcia Veritas rods, you can see me coming from a mile away... Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted November 3, 2015 Super User Posted November 3, 2015 I have been wondering about these too....but I just really hate colorful rods. Everything should be Black/Silver. Now get off my lawn. 1 Quote
Slade House Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 the yellow POS? they suck, they don't hold up for diddily , go daiwa or megabass or IROD , moving on Quote
Bass2124 Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 the yellow POS? they suck, they don't hold up for diddily , go daiwa or megabass or IROD , moving on Couldn't disagree more with the rods I have. I have their dropshot, crankbait, shaky head/senko, and jig rod and love them all. As sensitive as my higher priced rods. No one is harder on their equipment than me and they have out lasted all other rods combined. For the price you can't beat them. I have had 5 veritas rods (love them too) but they are not even comparable when it comes to the durability. I have broken 3 of the veritas rods over the last few years. Abu has one of the the best warranty's around though so I stay with them. Quote
DaleGribble Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 These rods are terrible. They are super brittle. I have seen at least a few dozen that broke somewhere in the last 3rd of the rod tip. Do not buy. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted November 5, 2015 Super User Posted November 5, 2015 Bought one years ago and sold it shortly after. Not worth half of what they charge and the yellow is just too much. Quote
black94gt50 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I have two of them. I have the worm and jig rod, and it has been super tough. I also have the spinner bait rod, I don't care much for it. Whatever you do, don't get the microguide ones, stick with the bigger guides. The microguide a they use on the rods are terrible and very weak. Quote
black94gt50 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Also, don't overthink it. If you like the way the rod feels in your hand, buy it and try it out on the water for a few months. If you like it continue to fish with it, if not, sell it. Just because someone else says it's junk absolutely doesn't mean you won't like the rod. Some of my most used and favorite rods are ones I've gotten on sale for 50$. Just have to try them out and find what suites you the best. 1 Quote
wisconsin heat Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I have the 7'2" Worm&Jig. I like it. I have been playing around with rods in the 80-$100 price range though and I would put the Skeet Reese at the lower end. It's a tad heavy, not and not quite as sensitive as some other rods in the price range. I bought a 7' Senko Toad rod a few years ago, and the first trip a rod guide busted off for no reason, I didn't like the feel of the rod anyway. I returned that rod, and bought a Fenwick HMG that they had in store. I love that HMG so much that I just bought another one. I would also check out the *** *** Black, or the *** rods, heard good things about those, even though I haven't used them personally. Quote
Cgrinder Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Nothing special unfortunately, and the warranty replacement process falls short of competitor's. I bought the 7' glass rod years ago as baby's first crankbait rod. The yellow is truly hideous but fades a bit over time. You can do a lot better for the money with other brands these days. Quote
