iaYakker Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Just how many straps do you want to use? I'll probably get foam blocks. 2 to secure the blocks, 2 to go inside doors, and 2 for bow and stern? Just need to know exactly what to buy. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 30, 2015 Super User Posted October 30, 2015 You're obviously talking top of car loading? In that case, I'd go two across middle and one for each bow, stern. Quote

Super User Scott F Posted October 30, 2015 Super User Posted October 30, 2015 Watch out using the straps. Pull them too tight and you will deform the hull of your kayak. Too loose, and you'll be picking it up off the road. You may be trying to save some money, who doesn't, but a kayak roof rack will protect your 'yak, and the roof of your car. They are a good investment. Quote
boostr Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Go on youtube, there are plenty of vids of how to tie down a kayak. Quote

desmobob Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Any thoughts on a good one to buy that would be good for 1 kayak? I've got a smaller car. I have a Thule rack and Yakima kayak cradles on my Subaru Forester. Thule sells a very nice canoe/kayak tie-down kit that includes a pair of ratcheting ropes for the bow and stern, and two nice flat straps for amidships. Very secure and easy to use. The piece of mind is worth the money spent! Tight lines, Bob Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 One tip when securing the straps. To avoid wind hum and vibration of the straps while transporting, twist the straps across the hull and as you are securing them. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted November 4, 2015 Super User Posted November 4, 2015 I got Thule Glide and Set. Pretty pricey, but I got new off ebay for $100 (and crossbars for another $75.) The Thule set is pretty pricey, no question. However, it was definitely worth it to me. They go on (or come off) in a couple minutes. They came with two cross over straps and ratcheting bow and stern lines with hooks. I don't use the bow and stern lines for short, non-highway trips. Quote
Caliyak Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Sell your car and get a Silverado, one strap does the job. LOL Quote
