Coldest air temp I've ever caught a Largie in. 31 degree air temp, 54 degree water temp, Lake Ontario fishing around St. Vincent, NY last week. Brian.

Nice fish, but I gotta ask, why don't you catch them when the air and water temp are lower ?

Is it too cold for them to bite or just too cold to mess with it ?

Really not trying to be a smart a$$ here but I'm in central Florida and while the chamber of commerce and tourist officials won't admit to it, it gets colder than that on occasion down here. Not very often mind you but it does happen.

Some of my best catches have been when the temperature was in the twenties, my line guides and level wind were icing up and I looked like the Michellin Man I had so many clothes on !

It doesn't take much but this puzzles me.

I've caught them down to water temps in the mid 30's and broke ice to catch Smallies. I just don't find it very enjoyable to fish in air temps in the 20's. Caught my last Largie of 2014 on Dec. 27th and my first of 2015 on Jan. 1st, in PA. Good air temps, cold water. Brian.

Ive never broke ice for em but I've drilled holes through the ice for them. Caught them well into the negatives but in a nice (somewhat warm) fish house.

I'm happy for ya, but think I'll stay here and suffer through our brutal Florida summers.

Don't get me wrong, I like some cool weather but fishing thru the ice ?

I'll stick with the bug spray and fish at night during the hot summers, then enjoy our "winters" down here !

Carry on !
