chmeyers Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Ive been snagging a lot of 1-2LBers here last few days. My question is, are big bass close by or in the same area as smaller bass? Quote
RHuff Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Try a bigger bait? Maybe something with a little more profile? I am in the same boat I can catch bass all day but nothing never seems to have any size to it. I want a 3 or 4 pounder get tired of my catches constantly be 1 to 2 lbs... Quote
Super User Shane J Posted October 29, 2015 Super User Posted October 29, 2015 Short answer... maybe. In my experience, most of the time, The bigger bass are elsewhere. Sometimes you do have to leave fish to find bigger fish. If all I'm catching is smaller fish, I'm gone to look for the big gals. 6 Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 29, 2015 Super User Posted October 29, 2015 Define: close by How big is same area? Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 29, 2015 Super User Posted October 29, 2015 If your question is directed about largemouth bass, they tend to group up by year class until there are very few of that year class in the population. It starts when they are fry, fingerlings, baby bass, young of the year and continues as adults. Every bass stays near it's prey, the biggest bass having the first choice where it wants to locate, it called the pecking order. Keep in mind smaller size males of a year class can be mixed with larger size females of the same class, not every bass grows at the same rate. Tom Quote

hatrix Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I am pretty sure they are around here somewhere. I won't be there for a little while but I am pretty sure they are somewhere very close by. Quote

How big a Pond? What are air and water temps? Pond contours? Cover? Depths? Stumps, Rocks, Pads? Clear water, Murky water? Quote
Bass newb Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 My bass went from small to 2 and 3 lb bass when I stopped fishing worms and started fishing buzzbaits spinner baits and frogs. 1 Quote
chmeyers Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 How big a Pond? What are air and water temps? Pond contours? Cover? Depths? Stumps, Rocks, Pads? Clear water, Murky water? Ponds usually are darker water with god knows what under them. I can feel a definitive grass line as I'm reeling in. Water and air are both still pretty warm. Id say mid 60s right now. Quote

Water and air are both still pretty warm. Id say mid 60s right now. There's a pond near me that's 1400 acres.. The depth at max is 6-8 feet depending on the time of year. The middle is for Pick and Pike. The shores are filled with reeds, pads, cabomba, min foils, rocks in some areas on the East side, overhanging trees, inlets outlets, winds mostly from the SW push chopped weeds to the north shore which packs against vegetation. I never fish the middle pool. I'm always in the junk often close to the inlets where the water is clean and highly oxygenated. The bass are super healthy, really strong. I still don't know enough about your pond to tell you much more than to rip a lip less crank or spinner bait over the tips of the growth or throw a frog or toad near the cover areas or swim a jig along the open water edge of them. That must be the worlds biggest pond. What really determines if something is a pond or lake? I know places named X pond or X lake and some ponds are bigger then some named blah blah lake. 1 Quote
Jtrout Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 If light penetrates to the bottom its a pond and if not its a lake im pretty sure thats the difference. Quote

WPCfishing Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 1400 acres....what do you consider a small lake? Tom The 1400 acre pond is max 8' deep when the water level is up to par. If this body of water was deeper I'd consider it a lake, maybe 20'. Here's a link: http://www.infoplease.com/askeds/pond-lake.html Quote

I realize these terms are somewhat ambiguous and there is a lot of disagreement on where to draw the line, but 1400 acres seems a bit excessive to me. Im mainly small lake and pond fishing!!!! Just knowing the state you're in would narrow it down. Details will help immensely. Quote

I've been on Okeechobee, It is a lot like the 1400 acre pond near me. You're right... I really don't care what the reasoning is.. It's all about the Lunkers. 1 Quote

Theirs another lake near me called a Reservoir and Pond. It's take your pic I guess. It's about 800 acres. Maximum depth is 26'. It's totally different for the 1400 acre lake. I've done well fishing the over hanging trees and rocky areas. Some nice bass in there but not like the 1400 acre pond. Quote
