I think I'm going to stick it out with one of my spinning setups, but I also want a baitcaster for my 2nd setup. Probably 7 feet. I have used my dad's lefty baitcast, but still have yet to learn how to do it well. Is it better to go after a combo or get the rod/reel separate? I'm looking at spending less than $150 total. Need some recommendations. Thanks!

No 8. Tackle company *** and a Lews LFS Speed Spool reel would get you in right around $150 (you can probably find the best deals on both on eBay, from Buy It Now sellers). I have the reel; love it, and the rod I have heard excellent things of.

Can anyone else vouch for the No 8 blackout?

I think you can get a BPS Pro Qualifier combo for around that. Pretty good value.

Spend most of it on a good reel as that is more important then a rod when you have nothing. Don't be afraid to buy a used reel to save some money as long as its not beat on. You could find a nice used reel for $100-120 and it will be a reel you keep forever. Also I guess those berkley rods are fairly decent and tjeu are cheap like $30 or so.

What are some good reel options I could get used for 100 ish or a little less?

That are $100 brand new from a retailer not that many. There are quite a lot of models you can find used for about $100 though. A Lews Tourny, I think they are called tournament MB now. Lews BB-Z, shimano citica, or curado.

Really I personaly wkukd try to find a used reel and you can find great deals. Today for example I saw someone selling a used Daiwa zillons for $100 and it was in amazing condition. That's a steal right there.

Most combos I don't feel you get the quality as you will with buying them separately. However, BPS and Cabelas both set up combos with mixing name brand reels with their house brand rods and you can save some money that way. If you do that though you're limited to what reels the choose to do it with. Otherwise, as mentioned you could buy used and get more gear for your money. As far as new reels go a Pro Qualifier can be had for $100 and they're very highly reviewed and they often go on sale.

I don't like to go the combo route. It seems like a lot of them sacrifice quality on either the reel or rod to lower the price and make it seem like a good deal. As for the reel, I noticed someone suggested a Lews speed spool, and I love Lews baitcasters. The last 3 baitcasters I have purchased (2 Lews and 1 Pfleuger) have been on ebay, brand new in the box and waaaay less than retail.

Another vote for lews, as a $100 reel candidate and if you can swing it the new *** rod of your choice in the $100 ish range should do you good. Me experience is you get less with the packaged together combos as opposed to buying separate

I've got my eye on the Lews speed spool or Pro Qualifier. Maybe paired with an Abu Vendetta or Berkeley Lightning rod??

I would not recommend a normal speed spool as they only have mag brakes. I would also not recommend buying a PQ unless they are on sale. PQ's are a fairly good reel but not worth it unless it's a sale. Are you left or right hand retrieve? I have seen tons of rods and reels for sale and even some nice combos peole are selling in your price range. I could point you to them if you are interested in maybe buying someone's used rod or reel.

I would be willing to find one in like new shape. Right hand retrieve. I have used a left hand retrieve sparingly because that's why my dad uses, even though he's right handed. Feels awkward to me. Probably easier to cast though.
