Super User everythingthatswims Posted October 28, 2015 Super User Posted October 28, 2015 I have the jr version and although it looks great and looks exactly like a megabass, it noses up on the pause and no matter how hard I try, I can't get it to nose down with changing hooks, split rings, or using lead wire on the treble. Yesterday saw that they are now on sale for 5.97 at dicks sporting goods, so did I just get a bad bait and would it be worth trying a couple more or the bigger size? If not, I'm gonna have a big hole in my wallet because the megabass baits are right next to them on the shelf. Quote
Ginosocalbass Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 they are inconsistent bait to bait. PM sent Quote
Jaw1 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 The bigger version have caught a lot of fish for me but the hooks are not that good. Nothing beats a 110 to me though Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 28, 2015 Super User Posted October 28, 2015 I actually like these baits and I have quite a few and yes, I also own the original 110. I fish the 110 when the water is a little warmer, the RC STX suspends much better because the 110 is not a suspending bait, it is a slow floater. You won't get the RC STX to suspend nose down, not every bait does that and it is something some people like and some don't. I like the LC Pointers and Rogues because they suspend close to level, the RC STX will stop nose down and then suspend just about level, it is made to do that, the 110 does it also but because it is a slow floater you don't have it stopped long enough to see it. I have both sizes of the RC STX and I have maybe a dozen of each size and they are killers on smallmouth, don't think that because the nose isn't pointing down that it doesn't work, places that have mainly a shad forage base like the baits to be floating nose down because a shad does that when they get cold shocked, chubs, darters, and other types of minnows do not so don't sweat it. IAY Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 they are inconsistent bait to bait. PM sent I bought one to try it out, and I immediately noticed that it ran right when I was retrieving. After taking a closer look, there was a big lump of epoxy or plastic on one side. I will just buy the 110s since I know what I can expect from MB. If I want to save money, I would order them from Japan. Quote
thebillsman Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 The few RC 110s I have are awesome and suspend nose down perfectly. The smaller version hasn't been good to me though. None of mine float? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 28, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 28, 2015 I have a bunch of the STXs in both sizes and haven't had any problems with any of them other than bad hooks. Quote
Drew03cmc Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 What size hooks are recommended for replacing the factory junk? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 29, 2015 Super User Posted October 29, 2015 The factory hooks are VMC 8540, I get them from Lure Parts Online as they seem to be the only ones that have them. I will use a single Owner ST-36 in the middle or front hook but only 1 because 2 or more will make the bait sink but most often I use the VMC 8540. I was told by Luck-E-Strike to use that hook because that is what is on the bait from the factory, a light wire VMC. For those that don't know this, the Katsuage out barb hooks on the Megabass 110 are also made by VMC and they too are light wire, the reason is they we made to be fished with light tackle, spinning rods and 6lb to 8lb line. When you use 10lb or 12lb line we tend to pull a little harder on the fish that will bend the hook, and a hook that bends out isn't bad, it just means you are using heavier tackle than what should be used. BTW, I've landed 5lb smallmouth with the stock hooks and didn't bend them out and they held fine, I got myself a 6'6" ML-M casting rod and fish the bait with 10lb line with a loose drag setting, in the cold water it adds about a minute to the fight but in cold, highly oxygenated water it isn't a bad thing. The one mistake they made with that bait is they made it suspend too good, if you use a hook with just a tiny bit more weight like the ST-36 from Owner, it will make the bait sink, because the Megabass 110 is a slow riser, a slightly heavier hook will make it suspend a little better but the hooks aren't junk, just light wire hooks that work fine if you use the right tackle. We all know the RC STX is a direct copy of the Megabass 110, they copied right down to the hook, as I said before, the 110 was designed to be used with a spinning rod or light casting rod with 6lb to 8lb line and when using light line you want thin wire hooks with wicked sharp points so they penetrate with little pressure. You can change out the hooks and mess with it if you like but I catch plenty of fish and the hooks hold out fine and when one bends I'll replace it with a VMC 8540, simple and it works. 1 Quote
Jaw1 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Going to respectfully disagree about the hooks. I fish these with 8 to 10 pound test on a light rod and I have had a lot of the hooks break and of course bend. All hooks bend just seems these bend more. I will still continue to use the factory hooks because I'm fishing for fun not tourney fishing these days. I have never been willing to change out hooks on new baits before they are damaged but I do once they are. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted October 29, 2015 Super User Posted October 29, 2015 Have you tried to put suspend dots under the nose/bill? Quote
Super User Munkin Posted October 29, 2015 Super User Posted October 29, 2015 they are inconsistent bait to bait. I noticed the same thing as all the ones I tried set differently in the water. Allen Quote
a1712 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I have one that sits completely vertical on the pause. Have not had a chance to mess with it to find the cause. It's deff a different presentation. Brian. 1 Quote

That usually happens when the ball used for the weight transfer system gets stuck in the tail of the bait and doesn't fall to the nose once the bait had entered the water. 1 Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Wasnt this the bait that had a bad reputation because the split rings were very soft and failed? I know they fixed that prob a while ago Quote
