Eddy Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I am looking for a good deep cranking combo I thinking about a 6'8 or a 7' My rod with a fast action tip. Quote
MidTNKayakAngler Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Med Heavy 7'7" - 7'11" with soft tip. Reel must be a lower gear ratio no higher than 6.2:1, prefer 5.1.1 for the deep cranks 16'+ Line 14 - 17lb Fluorocarbon. Size depends on structure I'm fishing around. Quote
Eddy Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 But are you sure about such a long rid? Quote
MidTNKayakAngler Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I like the longer rod, because with deep cranks I want the longest cast I can get, and the extra length helps, I also keep the rod tip down and below the surface to get the crank down a little deeper, the longer rod also give you more play which is helpful with treble hooks, and deep cranks. These are my personal preferences, and what I have found that works best for me. Quote
MidwestF1sh Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 For cranks don't want a fast action and for deep cranks you need a long rod to cast those big plugs out far. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted October 28, 2015 Super User Posted October 28, 2015 Here's my deep cranking lineup that I use. Zillion 4.9:1 on a Dobyns Champion 765CB (7'6" MH-Moderate action) with 12lb. Fluoro Zillion 4.9:1 on a Abu Veracity 7'11" MH-Winch (Moderate action) with 12lb. FluoroChronarch E5 on a St. Croix Avid 7' H-Moderate with 40lb. 832 Braid with 12-14lb. FC Leader Quote
gailt Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I use a Lews BB1 5.1 to 1 with a pinacle perfecta DH5 7'"11" medium heavy moderate tip,and it works pretty good.If you're set on a shorter rod I believe the perfecta is available 7' with moderate tip which I believe works best.I bought the pinnacle when I got an email offer from Dick's for $30 off 100 so I saved a few bucks. gailt Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I forgot to add I'm a wheelchair user, and I don't find the longer rod difficult to use for crankbaits at all, where I have trouble is using a jerkbait, for that I use a short 6ft rod,but it still gives me fits . Quote
JustinU1X Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I’ve been reading up on deep cranking rods as well. The consensus seems to be the longer the better. It’ll help cast those cranks far and it will keep them in the strike zone longer. The action on the other hand seems like personal preference. Most people like Medium-Heavy with a Mod to Mod-Fast action to prevent them from ripping the treble hooks out. Some pros like Dudley like a fast tip because it’s more sensitive. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 28, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 28, 2015 What I use is a 7ft Phenix X11 composite rod with a Johnny Morris Sig reel spooled with 12# Yo Zuri. The rod is rated for 3oz so it has a lot of backbone for deep diver's but still light, nimble and soft enough for deep fishin including sq. bills. You didn't say what price range you're looking for. The X Series is $150+ but well, well worth it imho. Good Luck Mike Quote
MasonV Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Definitely 7' at least and MH. I use a fast action because I feel most often with a deep crank you're gonna have long hooksets so you can use a little help getting a solid hookset. I don't have a problem losing fish with it. Quote
timsford Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I'd look for a rod between 7'-8'. Most deep crank rods are 7'6" or longer. It helps to get a longer cast so that you get maximum distance and depth out of your crankbait. You can use any action you want, but I prefer a moderate fast or moderate action for cranks. Rods can be fiberglass, graphite, or a composite of the two. Also I wouldn't worry about the power ratings(medium, medium heavy, heavy), but instead look at the lure weight rating and make sure it can handle the lures you want to throw. As far as a reel goes I prefer a 5.x:1 reel for deep cranks. As long as it holds enough line and has a slower gear ratio so you have the pinching power to keep a hard digging crank from wearing you out, you should be fine Quote
