Sandhillcrab Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I'm making my own spinner and buzz baits and needing a good company to buy from. Anyone know some farly good brand name company's that is cheep to buy from? Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted October 27, 2015 Super User Posted October 27, 2015 Good luck. Let us see them when finished or through the process. I understand the desire to catch fish on something you make. You'll probably spend more than a good one from Walmart costs unless you mass produce them. 1 Quote
Sandhillcrab Posted October 27, 2015 Author Posted October 27, 2015 A buzz at Walmart is about $1.75 and I can make then for $1.00 each. So I'm saving a bit of money. But the pike still take em from me haha. So I still lose money on them. But still fun to make. and also can make them as loud as I want. (Can modify the Walmart ones but that's no fun) 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted October 27, 2015 Super User Posted October 27, 2015 Check out Barlows. I've bought quite a bit of stuff from them and been very happy. 2 Quote
badhatharry Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I get most of my components here. Good Luck! http://lurepartsonline.com/ 2 Quote
Sandhillcrab Posted October 27, 2015 Author Posted October 27, 2015 Thanks y'all. I sure will check all them out! Quote
tholmes Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I've bought lure components from both Barlow's ad Lure Parts Online and both are top-notch people to deal with. You might also check out http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/. Sometimes one place will carry something that the others don't. Tom 2 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 28, 2015 Super User Posted October 28, 2015 It cost me more than a dollar to make my spinnerbaits because I use high grade wire and top of the line Worth Ball Bearing swivels, those alone are 70 cents each and then 20 cents for each skirt tab with a minimum of 2 so right there with swivel and skirt I'm at $1.10 not counting the wire, hooks, blades, beads and spacers, lead, 3D eyes, paint, top coat, and of course, time. So, if I used the cheapest pre-bent wire forms, crane swivels, and cheap hooks with the Chinese 3D eyes that are cheap but lack the quality of WTP Eyes, I probably could get my baits down to about a dollar. I'd love to see 1 of your creations and since you're looking for a cheaper place to buy components I was wondering where you were buying them from to begin with. I'll see if I can paste a picture of one of my baits for reference. 2 Quote
Sandhillcrab Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 Yes!! I will post some pics when I get home today. I got some chatter bait stuff last night from a friend. I'll copy a link to ware I buy from as well. And that's a great looking spinner bait! Quote
Sandhillcrab Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 The main reason I want to buy and make my own is it's cheaper. And also very fun to make. I get more pride from getting fish on something I made. And also how I want it made. 2 blades. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 28, 2015 Super User Posted October 28, 2015 The main reason I want to buy and make my own is it's cheaper. And also very fun to make. I get more pride from getting fish on something I made. And also how I want it made. 2 blades. I started making my own spinnerbaits close to 18 years ago as I couldn't get the right kind of bait but as far as being cheaper, not really. It takes years to recoup the investment, I got a pouring pot, 200 blades willow leaf blades, a mold, 100 pre bent wire forms and skirt material, hooks, and beads I cost me close to $300 and it took 4 years to recoup the initial start up cost. I started my own business 5 years after I got started because it took that long until I was confident enough that my baits were good enough to accept money for but I only made enough to continue buying supplies, very little profit in making lures unless you are spin casting. Once you have all the basics then spinnerbaits aren't expensive and it is a lot of fun making them but getting into it to save money is the wrong reason and most guys quit within the first year when they discover there is more to it than dumping lead into a mold. If you need any help please feel free to ask, the spinnerbait in my favorite lure and I have learned a lot about making them but remember, I'm not making cheap baits, I use top quality components so you can easily go to Walmart and buy a bait for less than what it cost me to make one because I believe if you are going to make them, do so the right way and make a high quality bait. 3 Quote
Sandhillcrab Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 I don't buy most of my baits. I use farly cheep wire. But it works well. I but most spinner bait heads. I don't make my own of them. I try to make my own blads out of aluminum. They all work well. Cheep swivels as well. I make them because it's fun and passes the time. I do sell a good amount of what I make. I don't make much but I'm not concerned about profits. I do it for fun. Quote
Jaw1 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I agree with smalljaw in that building your own baits is not a money saver in the long run, using cheaper components will get old to you after awhile and you will want different/ better stuff thus spending more money. That being said for me it's just fun to do and a great way to pass the winter or rainy days. I still buy store brands when I'm compelled to but I pour my own and play around with paint schemes just because I can and I enjoy it. Spinnerbait fishing is my least favorite way to catch fish these days so I don't but or build many anymore unless friends ask but lurecraft in General is enjoyable and I tinker with it all 2 Quote

Rick Howard Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I recently cleans my garage and found about 40 old spinner baits from when I was a teenager. Most are 15-20 years old. I'm glad I never tossed them. Despite needing new skirts about half of them are still good. The other half are not too bad except for the hook. My plan is to try to recondition them. What can't be saved will be canibalized. You might keep eyes on ebay and garage sales for used baits that you can use for parts. I bought skirt materials from fishingskirts.com. They have spinner and buzz bait parts there too. 1 Quote
