new to this site yesterday (or day before) ?  greetings to everyone.  I look forward to spending time on this site and making a few friends and becoming a better fisherman.

spent hours reading old post trying to figure out what high end baitcasting and spinning rod & reels to buy.

Have ONLY used spinning gear to date so really looking forward to getting a new baitcasting setup.

My list of baitcasting reels to look at includes:

Curado 200I

Abu Garcia Revo, MGX xtreme

Quantum Tour MG

Duckett 360 series

Rods:

Mega bass Orochi xx

Kistler Helium 3

G. Loomis IMX & GLX
St. Croix Legend (and others)
Seeker
Shimano

I do quite a bit of salt water fishing and would like to get knee deep into bass and freshwater fishing. I like to purchase high quality gear and really don't mind spending the extra money. I hate junk.
I know that rods are specific to certain types of fishing but I am not at that level yet. Just used spinnerbaits, texas rigs, jitterbugs, carolina rigs, metals, crankbaits, soft plastics, swimbaits, ....  (have not tried drop shot yet but plan on trying everything).

I live in upstate New York, near Albany.  I do not know of any large high end tackle shops close to me to browse so decided to drive to Jersey (tackledirect). I wish I knew of some place closer as 4 1/2 hours is a long way to drive to look at tackle. BassProshop is in Mass  is closer but I doubt they will carry all the items I wish to look at. Does anyone know of someplace closer that they could recomend ?

Hey welcome to bass resource. Glad to see another albany native on here. You certainly have quite a list there. As to you last question I am not aware of any place closer than those you listed that has a great tackle selection.

I'm not in your area, so google would be just as good at answering your questions as I would. There are plenty of sites on the internet to shop on if you would prefer that over a long drive.

If you don't need to feel/handle the gear before you buy, just wait a month for Tackle Warehouse to have their Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale.  As for your rod and reel selection I would maybe stick to 1-2 brands on a reel, preferably just 1 if you find a brand you like.  As for rods I don't know of Seeker making any freshwater models (inshore/surf maybe?) and Shimano has kind of gone downhill for me since they changed their warranty to one year and no longer over the counter.  They kept the lifetime warranty with GLoomis, and Megabass/St. Croix are top notch.  Maybe also take a look at Phenix for rods as well.

Welcome, I just started bass fishing about 30 -45 days ago and like to stick with higher end gear also, although I live in VA I am from Albany originally and parents still have lake house just north of Albany just off Northway.

I have a Basspro by me plus several very nice large outdoor stores with great selections of fishing gear. I have learned that even if these stores have the name brands I want they do not stock their higher end models. Higher end is relative, I am sure their is a lot more expensive gear out there than I am interested in.

Ex. Just today I picked up a Dobyns Champion series jerkbait rod for $230. Only one of my stores carry Dobyns but they don't stock the Champion series so they had to order it in. I wanted to buy the Lews Team Lite LS reel ($239) but none of my local stores carry the Lews reels over $200 and needed up to 2 weeks to get it, so I had to order thru amazon and will get it by weeks end.

I am lucky that I can feel alot of gear options that my stores stock to get an idea of what I like. I started with a middle of road St. croix with basspro shops baitcaster reel to see how'd I do. I have added 2 dobyns, 1 G. Loomis and three Curado's plus the Lewshigh for each.

You can get crazy buying rods/reels, some have rods for each technique or type of bait. You can make it as easy or as complicated as you want.

I was going to get a an Orochi xxx jerkbait rod but got the Dobyns instead because the Orochi doesn't come in length I wanted. I have three Curado reels and love them, the Lews I just ordered was mostly wanting to try something different.

You kinda sound a little bit like me. Looks like your a Dobyns fan. I actually forgot to add that one to my orig post as a "check them out". I have heard so much good hype about the Curado that I think one might fall into my shopping cart while at tackledirect.  I was surprised to see while talking to a lot of boat fisherman either coming or going off the launch that most had 3..... sometimes 4 rods on their boat. Thats my goal, 3 or 4.

it is easy to become inindated (spelling ?) with all the good choices out there. I have heard of  Phenix but have not investigated. I think they will go on my check out list also for my visit to tackledirect. I would like to do a lot of research prior to my shopping visit so I am 80% knowledgable and can listen to the salesmen pitch. Im not sure if I would like the salesmen to choose my rod/reel, sometimes they can get in a "rut" if you know what I mean, but don't we all.  I value their opinion but just use it in the final decision making. Thanks for the tip.

I have three Curado's, one in each gear ratio. They are great especially once you learn to dial brakes in.

I am trying to keep sticks to minimum as well. My next and possible last will be a 7' Dobyns Champion Extreme HP or Orochi xxx spinning finesse rod, or at least I think it will be last:)

Sounds to me like you are a candidate for a couple of Mike's DVT custom rods.

Ask him about building with RainShadow blanks from Batson. Maybe the Eternity

or Immortal blank, Toray reel seat and Alps titanium guides. I think you can build the

perfect rod for less than $500.

Welcome aboard!

welcome, and in new jersey, the selection of sizeable fishing stores other than Tackle Direct and DSG is pretty much nonexistent. Don't you have a local GM next to you? I'd love to have one of those in jersey  lol

Welcome, I'm from just over the VT mountains in southwestern NH. You could possibly hit Cabelas in Hartford on your way back through, but that's just too much driving for too little high end stuff.

I'd sift through the classifieds here, ***, and eBay. There's a ton of good deals if you're ready to pull the trigger. Have fun with it.

It's not where you live.. This is a problem just about everywhere unless you're close to tackle Warehouse or Academy, ect... . Nothing much to look at it the stores or no stores at all. It's the new miserable thing.
