smallies24/7 Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I see a lot of complaints about reel seats on jerkbait rods, irritating peoples hands because of the constant movement of the rod. So I was wondering, how would throwing a jerkbait on a spinning rod work, with a casting reel? Are there any disadvantages im missing? Because I havent seen many people do it. I feel like it would remove the irritation aspect because there is no trigger. What are your guys thought on this? Quote
Kidflex Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Couple of things I'd be concerned about. One is the large guides on a spinning rod facing up and second is the spine/spline of the rod are on different sides. Might break with added pressure or won't have the proper performance. Plus it'll just look ridiculous. Just find a rod with a comfortable reel seat. I went through a couple rod and reel combos to find a setup that was comfortable for jerkbaits. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 25, 2015 Super User Posted October 25, 2015 Just use a spinning rod and reel if you are having casting rod problems. 3 Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted October 25, 2015 Super User Posted October 25, 2015 Seems to get loops in the line and that makes loops on your spool slack line and spinning reels dont mix well 1 Quote
BradGuenette Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Up here in Canada most folks are throwing Jerkbaits on spinning tackle with a braid/fc lead, much easier to throw on a real real windy day, I also find it a lot easier on the arm when your working the bait very erratic all day. 1 Quote
Logan S Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 You're overthinking it. No reason you can't fish jerkbaits on a spinning rod (with the spinning reel ). I use spinning tackle for smaller jerkbaits and every now and then I'll use it for full size ones too... FWIW, the 'gold-standard' jerkbait of the past 10 years or so, the Vision 110, was designed to be fished on spinning tackle from what I've read. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 26, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 26, 2015 I do it all the time, especially if I need to use lighter line to get deeper, which is exactly what I was doing when I caught my largest smallmouth of this year. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 26, 2015 Super User Posted October 26, 2015 I prefer spinning gear for jerk baits. Wind knots can happen if you aren't paying attention. I recommend paying attention. Close the bail quickly, by hand, immediately after the bait lands. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted October 26, 2015 Super User Posted October 26, 2015 It sounds like you are having issues with the shape/size of the reel seat. There are a number of mods that can be made ranging from wrapping with tennis/athletic tape to dremeling the trigger to a custom handle. The size/shape of the reel also come into play depending on how you grip the rod. Lastly taping fingers works wonders for some. I throw jerkbaits on both spinning and BCs, a good way to give one hand/arm a rest when fishing a lot. KISS, identify the problem and solve it (and then come up with a technique name for it)... Quote
RyanFishing Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 I love using jerkbaits with a spinning rod (and spinning reel). My by far favorite rid to use is 6'8" M XF. It's comfortable and easy to use and I feel I just have more control. I also use 15# braid with a real short 10-15# fluoro leader. With the braid I'm able to get more crisp movements of the bait on long casts. I'm also able to detect bites better and get a good hookset. My opinion would be to just go to a spinning setup. Quote
