Super User flyfisher Posted October 25, 2015 Super User Posted October 25, 2015 I was finally able to get out yesterday for a little while. I went to one of my favorite lakes on a nearby military base that is usually not crowded and can produce some decent fish. Water temps and air temps were both in the high 50's and it was pretty cloudy. I caught a few on a fluke deadsticked near some lilly pads that hadn't died off yet. As i made my way to the back of the pond the water got shallower, about 2-3' but the water temps stayed the same. I began seeing some commotion on the top which i figured were pickerel as there are a lot in the lake. I grabbed my rod with the PopX i received in last year's Fishmas exchange and went to work. I ended up catching 4 small bass and one giant pickerel that bit through my line right at the kayak with the PopX still in his mouth....the fish still were busting around me but nothing else i had was getting bit. Either way, it was kind of cool to have a decent day with a topwater bite in sub 60 degree water. 1 Quote
68camaro Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Flyfisher, I am in Chesterfield and for the last 5-6 days the two ponds I fish went almost dead. Yesterday I tied on a popper and finally had success as well as this am, hopefully I can get out later. Sounds like you had a nice day. 1 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted October 25, 2015 Super User Posted October 25, 2015 Nice fish, fly. We were in Chesterfield for a soccer game yesterday. Driving over the James got our juices flowing. I hope to get out this week. First time this fall. No clue how the bite is down here right now. Just need to get out and in the yak, wet some line and feel the life flow through my veins again. Operative word: hope. 1 Quote

I did mark some interesting structure on the sidescan that i am not quite sure what it was but now i know where it is and can go back and check it out. I am planning on using this winter to do some recon type trips and mark potential staging areas for the spring time spawn Quote

Had a great time, first bass was a 2 pounder, second was another 2 pounder, then a 1.5, then the count went all the way to 7 bass on the day with one dink, the rest over 1.25 pounds. And one bluegill. Great to be back in the yak-saddle again! Side imaging is something I'd like to have, but it's way down on my list now. 1 Quote
