Super User clayton86 Posted October 24, 2015 Super User Posted October 24, 2015 Went duck hunting this morning for the first time ever and while I didn't hit anything not even the goose that came into our spread perfect and right at me bout to land I missed it but still had a blast. I told the guys going into it I haven't even shot bird shot out of a gun in over 15 years been nothing but slugs. Still had a blast and now have the idea of going in the kayak down some of the creeks near me where I see tons of wood ducks when fishing and seeing if I can't jump some ducks from the kayak. Any other duck hunters here Quote
desmobob Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Get ye to the skeet range and get tuned up! I spent opening day of duck season bass fishing. But I had my Beretta 390 along side my bow seat. I got a drake mallard and a Canada goose, along with some nice small- and largemouth bass. :-) I spent a lot of years hunting hard during duck season, several years on the committee of the local Ducks Unlimited chapter, and two years as the area chairman. Duck hunting is a whole lot of fun! Tight lines, Bob Quote
preach4bass Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I duck hunt. Similar to what you're describing, I went with a buddy several years ago and it messed me up. I think we killed two woodies, and by "we" I mean "he". I didn't hit a thing. But, I was hooked instantaneously. It's a lifestyle. If we're not duck hunting, we're scouting, working on habitat, training dogs, or talking about it. We were blessed to hunt 59 of the 60 days that the feds gave us to hunt laser year. Some of my best times and favorite memories are in the swamp. I love it with a passion, and hope you learn to as well! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 25, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 This past year was my first year really going duck hunting over decoys and calling them. First trip my buddy shot two greenheads. The next trip probably ruined me for life because I'll probably never experience another trip like it. Wave after wave of ducks coming over the trees, thousands of them. They couldn't even wait for us to finish setting up the decoys before they were coming in, my buddy didn't even have to call for them. It took a whole hour and a half to limit out, less if we had shot better. Got done so fast that we went fishing afterwords and caught a bunch of fish too It was a good week, my son was born 2 days later. 2 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 25, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 25, 2015 Yeah "we" got two geese and a woody as well. First shot of shooting hours was us at 707 we stood up and blasted a goose that landed in our set at dark. Few short moments later a woody landed in the set well we were focused on some geese coming in my buddy nailed the woody drake as it took back off right in front of us. The goose I missed my buddy who got the woody nailed. The ducks didn't seem to interested mostly woodies coming threw real high and a pair of mergansers.the geese when in large flocks didn't care for us but the occasional loner or pair argot to come in almost every time we(I) suck at shooting lol. 68camaro Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Clayton, I have never duck hunted but really want to try it. Have you ever upland bird hunting with bird dogs, way fun. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 25, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 25, 2015 WNY has little to none upland bird hunting. Pheasants are extremely rare and all we have sadly. I hunted them a few times but it wasn't much fun they release them on state land everyone goes out blasts them to oblivion and the Hawks pick off what everyone else misses. Last time I went I was 13 I think so 16 years ago. Quote

Have you ever upland bird hunting with bird dogs, way fun. Which Clayton are you talking to? I've done quite a bit of upland bird hunting, but not recently. Our pheasant and quail populations have been so poor here in Kansas that it's really not worth the time and money to go and maybe not even see anything. Cheaper to go to a game farm and shoot farm raised birds but not the same. Quote

Picture doesn't work, but tell me when. My dad had a pair of Brittanys when I was still too little to carry a shotgun. They were great dogs and I watched them work and flush a lot of birds. All the hunting I've done since has been without dogs. It's kind of like trying to fish offshore without electronics. 1 Quote

Guess when you organize your photobucket it breaks the link. I'll know how good this year is going to be after November 14. I'm pretty sure I can find some quail an hour South since they were antagonizing me this spring. Quote

I love quail hunting but I almost feel bad shooting one they've been so scarce. There's a couple big coveys at one of the places I deer hunt that like to test my heart when I'm walking to or from the stand in the dark. Inside the city limits though so no hunting them there. Use to always hear pheasants cackling while we were fishing Milford but the one time we tried hunting it all we could find were hens. Quote
scyounggun Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Jealous of all of yall that already have duck season open. Ours doesnt open until the 21st. Upland bird hunting is my second favorite behind ducks. We have 3 Llewellin setters. The quail have been suffering in SC but have been making a little bit of a comeback and we can have a decent woodcock season usually too. Quote

We'll be going to Dodge City for the opener, last year they shot around 80 birds opening day and the birds are supposed to improved. I've heard reports from buddies harvesting in North Central KS that the quail are thick this year. Quote

We'll have to go get on some quail this fall. Quote
cbass12 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 We'll have to go get on some quail this fall. Yes we will!!!! I've really missed that over the last ten years or so. Used to do a ton of quail hunting with my dad during my high school years around the eastern flint hills, but since the birds declined we haven't gone in a while. We're staying in Dodge but will be hunting some private ground west of there near Cimarron. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted November 13, 2015 Super User Posted November 13, 2015 Nothing better than a good ol' quail or pheasant hunt. Ryan, take a trip to South Dakota and pheasant hunt.... will make you forget all about Western Kansas... I promise. Quote
cbass12 Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 I hear you Coty, but it was pretty good out west this weekend. This is 62 of the 77 we shot opening day, a couple trucks were still out when I took this picture so we didn't have all the birds yet. We shot another 23 Sunday morning despite the wind and poor shooting. We saw some BIG coveys of quail too. I was impressed with the quail population considering we only hunted 3 spots the whole weekend and we saw 4 huge coveys. 1 Quote

I went when I was younger my buddy's dad raised and released them for the state we would always go shoot 3 or 4 and call it a season! I need to take a road trip it looks like lol Quote
