Super User bigbill Posted October 24, 2015 Super User Posted October 24, 2015 Anytime I use an ATM I'm always keep a watchful eye. Having situational awareness is very helpful in keeping you and others safe.I was outside in the car while my son used the ATM. The guy sitting down drinking a coffee was watching my son. The door in front of my car was the only way out of the place. Luckily he never made a move.We have to watch and be aware of our surroundings now. I good guy can't even go fishing. Once a person decides to ccw carry it's a 27/4/365 day job like your keys and wallet. Society surely has changed. 1 Quote

Super User bigbill Posted October 24, 2015 Super User Posted October 24, 2015 I read about the NYC officer killed and heard his last radio call. Then I read about the police k9 killed in action. Now a fisherman. Not good. My thoughts and prayers go out for everyone. I'd love to move to my place hidden in the mountains. Quote

Yep......people ask when/where I carry......I tell them everywhere/all the time......if you knew something was going to happen on the trip/errand.......I wouldn't go. You NEVER know when you will need to defend yourself....keep your head on a swivel. Again....prayers to his family. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 25, 2015 Super User Posted October 25, 2015 Even the family members and some Freinds don't know I'm packing. It's the element of surprise if something goes down. I teach every family member to learn the location of the exits and hiding out places when there eating out or at the mall. Don't ever kick in the panic mode keep your head on straight and your mind into survival mode. Look at and remember where all the closet exits are. What if the lights went out. Yes there are battery exit signs but what if they went out. Trust nothing to go right. Rely on yourself to get out with your family. Get them to a safe area. Don't trust me. Sit at your kitchen table, at night. Close all lights, close your eyes and try to get out. Now light the lights count the steps and turn to the door. Now put the lights out and try it again. My point when you walk in a restaurant count the steps, how many steps to a turn. It's not hard to remember which direction the door is in to get out. Stay calm just this could save your life. Klebs01 Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Some perspective for those that say nowhere is safe anymore...we have never been safer than we are now. Violent crime, including murder, is down 50% from 20 years ago. Even with the wars in the Middle East, total deaths from violence around the world are at historical lows. Some things are getting worse, but overall the world is continuing to get better every day. 2 Quote

Missourifishin Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 I don't see any need to bring politics or personal beliefs into this guys. I personally am guilty of it because I responded to a statement I STRONGLY disagreed with in this topic a day or two ago. I thought about it and quickly came back to delete what I said. But a moderator (Doing their jobs well) had already deleted my post and the posts of a couple other guys who got too political. Regardless of where any of us stand on political issues, I think we can all agree to just hope the perpetrator is brought to justice in this case. 1 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted October 26, 2015 Super User Posted October 26, 2015 I can't wait till I'm 21 so I can get a concealed carry license, the lake I fish a lot of times has zero people in the boat ramp area so if somebody decided to rob me I'd be screwed. 1 Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 26, 2015 Super User Posted October 26, 2015 What a terrible thing for this family and his friends!  My thoughts and best wishes to them.  According to what sources? The current DOJ ? FBI? Ask the folks in the Middle East if their lives & their family's lives are better than they were 20 years ago..you need to gain perspective my friend, that false narrative doesnt fly around here.Nice try though...  The FBI is one source and it isn't a false narrative.  Klebs01 is correct about the United States, and the world in general.  https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2013/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013/tables/1tabledatadecoverviewpdf/table_1_crime_in_the_united_states_by_volume_and_rate_per_100000_inhabitants_1994-2013.xls  This information is available to all if you do research, and by research I don't mean listening to or reading the sources that always feed you information that coincides with one's preconceived opinion on the subject.  That is a sure path to thinking one is knowledgeable while being misinformed.  Original source documents are often available if you take the time to find them. 1 Quote

Super User K_Mac Posted October 26, 2015 Super User Posted October 26, 2015 Excellent post Senile1. The world is still a dangerous place, though we can't live our lives in fear. I am a big advocate for concealed carry, but it is not a guarantee of anything. For all we know this fisherman could have been carrying. My point is we do the best we can, and life happens. Quote

MidTNKayakAngler Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 This happened in my backyard. I fish from this ramp a few times a year. It is very sad what happened to Greg this day. Â A fellow angler was killed while doing something we all love to do. When Gregg Hawkins left his house on Friday, October 16th, returning safely was probably not a concern of his. Unfortunately, Gregg was killed as he returned to the Mona Boat Ramp on the Stones River outside Smyrna, TN. The suspect(s) is still on the loose and a very small reward is being offered for information leading to their arrest.WE NEED YOUR HELP! In an effort to raise money for the family and reward amount, the kayak angling community is coming together to raise awareness and funds. This senseless murder happened in our backyard this time. Could it happen in your backyard next time? Please help us spread the word and raise the funds this family deserves to bring these criminals to justice. If you have information regarding this case, please call Rutherford County Crime Stoppers at 615-893-7867. Donations can be made via Paypal to:kayakanglersforacause@gmail.comAnything helps! Super User Choporoz Posted October 27, 2015 Super User Posted October 27, 2015 Not a lot of news out there yet. Apparently happened not at dawn or dusk, but in broad daylight at 11 AM. One article said he was returning from fishing with family....walked to get his vehicle and interrupted a 'crime in progress'. Sad and senseless indeed. Quote
The_fisherman Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I have no words. It's hard to believe that such a piecefull sport, that doesn't involve bullets and powder at all, could ended up with shooting. Quote
