Western-Mass-Bass Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Maybe its my mechanics in the cast. Ive always whipped it because of fishing with a spinning reel for so long. Quote

Western-Mass-Bass Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 Yes, But I believe its more of the shoulder movement when loading up that MH action rod of mine. Plus ive been a mechanic my whole life so Im sure some can be related to work. Quote

Super User K_Mac Posted October 21, 2015 Super User Posted October 21, 2015 Bigbill mentioned hitting the gym. Being in good shape makes things work better, especially as we get older. Many of the issues that limited my time on the water no longer do since I started hitting the gym a few years ago. 1 Quote

Super User bigbill Posted October 21, 2015 Super User Posted October 21, 2015 My normal fishing season starts in the spring fishing every morning up at 3:30am for over three months straight till I get burned out. It's fish, eat, shower, sleep, repeat. Bed by 8pm. When I became sick I stopped. Once your in the groove it's easy. But many of mornings I dragged myself out of bed at first. Being retired it becomes an addiction every morning. Grab that first cup of coffee on the way with a doughnut or bagel. Quote
BaitMonkey1984 Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I have not experienced this, maybe because I am young, fish most days, and always have been one who casts, casts, casts. Fish similar to KVD and Rick Clunn. Stretching couldn't hurt but I do not think it will relieve your pain. I think your best option to avoid any pain is to get a specific casting rod for cranks. This would help you out more than anything, if you do not already have a crank bait specific rod. 1 Quote

Yaknow Ive been wondering about possibly going with something with a faster action that would be a little easier because of my type of casting. Its a good point. Thanks Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 21, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 21, 2015 In some circles I'm considered an old man...well maybe in all circles. Anyway, the only thing that hurts on me is my back after standing, and stepping up and down on the deck for 8 hrs. If your shoulder hurts from casting all day my thought is that the angle of your arm on your downward stroke may be at an angle that is pulling your muscles in a way they're not designed to do. After you heal, try casting with more of a 3/4 side arm, or an underarm flick type delivery. Most times if my reel is set right I can get more distance with those kinds of casts than an over the head bomb.. Just a thought. Mike Quote

I guess alot of it could be some bad habits Ive picked up. Im really throwing hard with the cranks as Im trying to really cover some water. And its a hard over the shoulder whipping motion. Did alot of time with spinning reels as said before. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 21, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 21, 2015 It's real easy to get more height than distance on an over the shoulder bomb. Especially if you're really throwing hard TRYING to get the distance instead of letting the rod and a properly set reel give you all it can give, which is all you're gonna get. Good Luck Mike Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 21, 2015 Super User Posted October 21, 2015 Cast more. A-Jay Ya gotta exercise the muscles ya gonna use! I learned years ago to let my rod do the casting, it's way better at than me. 2 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 21, 2015 Super User Posted October 21, 2015 In my late 40's, 50's it never bothered me I was logging, riding dirt bikes with my son's. Fishing inbetween at night. Muscles were never sore.I was a gorilla logging jumping up on stone walls run a 100cc saw for hours non stop. Endless energy. I was doing great till 60yo hit. The decline started. Then 63yo hit the aches and pains, but at 65yo I'm going to return to fishing 24/7. The physical pains and crashes on the bikes we go through in my 40/50's we shrugged off return in our 60's. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 21, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 21, 2015 Stretching before and after a long day on the water will really reduce a lot of your soreness the next day in most cases. Quote

Super User K_Mac Posted October 22, 2015 Super User Posted October 22, 2015 "I am not trying to be the best at exercising, I play real sports." Kenny Powers I like the quote. Some of us enjoy the process of exercise though and it is very rare anymore to find anyone who excels at "real sports" who doesn't pay attention to diet and exercise. Not only does exercise enable us to be better, it also enables us to last longer...whether that's defined by endurance or longevity. Quote
