Hi, I have been living in Germany for over 20 years and have recently taken a look at some of the rods out of the USA. The rod standards are different than they are here. In Europe rods are rated by the weight of the lure you want to cast. 30g 100g etc. In the USA they are rated by line weight. What does that mean? With the new braided line, line weight can greater but also be much smaller in diameter that with mono. Is there any way to make sense of this method of rating? Thanks. ;) Hechtjaeger

Most rod blanks here are rated for Lure weight as well. I'm probably wrong, but I can't recall seeing one of the mass produced rods that list solely a recommended line spec, negating a recommended lure rating.

Like McB said.....U.S. rods are not rated by line strength.  I'm not sure why that spec is even on some rods.

There should be a lure weight rating on the blank....I don't think I've ever seen any reputable U.S. rods without it.

Agree with the others.  Lure wt will be given on most with a corresponding line weight.  Below are the "general guidelines" that I have for the rods I build - lure weight to corresponding line rating.

LURE WEIGHT      LINE WEIGHT      Power

1/64 - 1/16 oz.      1-6 lb.      Ultra light

1/16 - 1/4 oz.      6-10 lb.      Light

1/8 - 3/8 oz.      8-14 lb.      Medium light

3/16 - 5/8 oz.      12-20 lb      Medium heavy

1/4 - 3/4 oz.      14-25 lb.      Heavy

1/2 - 1 1/2 oz.      17-30 lb.      Extra Heavy

Sorry its in English units (oz) and not grams.

Hi to all that replied.  Thank you for the help.  My rod in question is an ABU "Workhorse" Boat Rod and the only rating is 12 pounds.  Anyway thanks for the info at least I have a starting place.  "Petri Heil" (German for good fishing).  Hechtjaeger

Ok, now boat rods (sorry if I missed that detail), at least the ones I have seen, will show the line ratings as opposed to the "lure weight" the reason being that they are typically not cast but rather trolled or jigged.
